Mazda CX-30 right rear quarter

The Mazda CX-30 is a compact SUV that'll appeal if you want a family car that's affordable to run.

With SUVs dominating the market, you have a multitude of choices available to you, such as the Peugeot 3008 and Volkswagen T-Roc. The Mazda CX-30 makes for a great alternative because of its upmarket design that won't cost you a premium.

Other reasons the Mazda CX-30 makes an excellent used car purchase include:

  • Handsome appearance
  • Good to drive
  • Plush interior
  • Plenty of safety features
  • Efficient engines

Engines and Driving Experience

Mazda CX-30 front left quarter

Because it's based on the Mazda3 hatchback, the CX-30 hides its SUV proportions really well. The steering is precise, while the suspension does an excellent job of dealing with rough road surfaces. Visibility is very good thanks to the raised driving position and large side mirrors.

Petrol

  • 2.0-litre e-SkyActiv-G: produces 120bhp, 0 to 62mph in 11.2 seconds, up to 47.9mpg
  • 2.0-litre e-SkyActiv-X: produces 184bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.3 seconds, up to 50.4mpg

Each of the engines above recruit the assistance of mild hybrid (MHEV) technology, helping to reduce emissions at lower speeds and improve fuel economy.

You may have noticed that the e-SkyAtiv-X engine offers greater efficiency despite producing more power. That's because it utilises a supercharger along with a host of minor changes. You'll pay a premium for this engine compared to the other petrol option.

Practicality and Running Costs

Mazda CX-30 boot

With five large doors and a spacious cabin, the CX-30 makes for a great family car. The rear back seats may feel a bit cosy for taller adults but will comfortably accommodate children. ISOFIX anchor points feature in the back, so fitting a child's seat is a doddle.

The CX-30 has a 430-litre boot, which is more than ample for family duties. It isn't as big as the likes of a Skoda Karoq (521 litres) but it makes up for this with a wide opening and minimal loading lip. Fold the rear seats down and you'll have 1,406 litres of space at your disposal.

Occupying insurance groups between 12 and 21 (out of 50), the CX-30 should be reasonable come renewal time. Affordable servicing and maintenance are available through all Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Mazda CX-30 cabin

The CX-30's cabin is an enjoyable place to spend time thanks to the upmarket design that's been complemented by a host of quality materials. The infotainment screen is vibrant and is controlled using the rotary dial on the centre console.

Each model in the range is generously equipped. The entry-level 'SE-L' benefits from Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear parking sensors, air-conditioning and LED headlights. 'SE-L Lux' examples add front parking sensors, a powered tailgate and heated front seats.

Go for the 'Sport Lux' model and you'll get larger alloy wheels, various exterior enhancements and luxuries such as a powered sunroof. Top spec models, including the GT Sport and GT Sport Tech, benefit from a 360-degree camera, leather upholstery and an upgraded sound system.

The CX-30 scored five stars during its Euro NCAP safety test because it's fitted with features, such as:

  • Lane keeping assist
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Hill start assist
  • Traffic sign recognition

Is the Mazda CX-30 right for me?

Competition in the compact SUV segment is fierce but the Mazda CX-30 makes a compelling case for itself. It's a handsome family car with an upmarket interior; it won't cost an arm and a leg to run; it has a generous equipment list and it's good to drive. In short, you can't go wrong with a Mazda CX-30.

We'd recommend looking at the likes of the Peugeot 3008 and Ford Puma before committing to the Mazda, since they're both well made and affordable to run. If you want something more upmarket, then the BMW X2 and Volkswagen T-Roc warrant a look.
