Volkswagen T-Roc side profile

The Volkswagen T-Roc is a compact family SUV that offers a suite of advanced technology alongside a spacious interior.

If you're in the market for a family SUV, then you have broad range of examples to choose from. The T-Roc occupies the middle ground between the smaller T-Cross and the larger Tiguan in Volkswagen's range of cars, making it a good choice if you want something practical without being too big.

There are a number of reasons you should consider a T-Roc as a used car purchase:

  • Volkswagen build quality
  • Roomy interior
  • Advanced technology
  • Refined driving experience
  • Punchy choice of engines

Engines and Driving Experience

The T-Roc offers a good blend of comfort and driving engagement, making it perfect for Britain's roads. Visibility is very good for the most part, making the T-Roc refreshingly simple to park in tight spaces.

Petrol

  • 1.0-litre: 109bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10.8 seconds, up to 46.9mpg
  • 1.5-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds, up to 45.2mpg
  • 2.0-litre: 187bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.1 seconds, up to 36.1mpg
  • 2.0-litre R: 297bhp, 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, up to 32.1mpg

Diesel

  • 2.0-litre: 113bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10.4 seconds, up to 60.2mpg
  • 2.0-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.8 seconds, up to 58.8mpg

It's worth noting that the 2.0-litre petrol models come with 4MOTION (all-wheel drive) and a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox as standard. Although fuel economy suffers, the high levels of grip make up for this.

Practicality and Running Costs

Volkswagen T-Roc boot

Sharing a lot of similarities with the Volkswagen Golf has paid dividends for the T-Roc, which offers a spacious cabin and a large boot. If anything, the T-Roc has more headroom than the Golf because of its higher roofline.

In addition to the larger cabin, the raised ride height means it's super-easy to fit a child's seat via the ISOFIX anchor points in the back of the car. With the rear seats left in place, the T-Roc offers a substantial 445 litres of boot space, which is more than what you get in a more expensive Audi Q2 (405 litres).

The majority of T-Roc models occupy insurance groups between 10 and 23 (out of 50), which is very good for this type of vehicle. Expect higher running costs if you opt for the performance 'R' model. Affordable servicing and maintenance is available through Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Volkswagen T-Roc cabin

Although it's not the most flamboyant to look at, the T-Roc's cabin impresses with its elegant design and logical layout. Each car gets a central touchscreen that offers intuitive use of the infotainment system, which controls features like the media player and vehicle settings.

Equipment levels are generous across the range. Entry-level cars get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, parking sensors for the front and rear, roof rails and adaptive cruise control. Higher-spec models come with luxuries such as ambient lighting, a digital instrument cluster and front sports seats.

A five-star Euro NCAP safety rating is reassuring given the T-Roc's remit as a family SUV. The reason it achieved such a high score is because of the following features:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rain sensor
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • Traction control

Is the Volkswagen T-Roc right for me?

Given the similarities it shares with the Golf, it's no surprise that the Volkswagen T-Roc is a fine all-rounder. With a spacious interior, efficient range of engines and an array of safety features, the T-Roc makes a compelling used car purchase if you have a family.

You're certainly spoiled for choice if you're in the market for this type of car. The Audi Q2 and BMW X2 are more premium alternatives that will appeal if brand kudos matters to you, while the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur warrant a mention because of the value they offer.
