Orange Volkswagen T-Cross rear

The Volkswagen T-Cross is a compact crossover that offers excellent build quality and an efficient range of engines.

As a brand, Volkswagen offer more SUVs than most manufacturers, with the T-Cross being the smallest that they sell. Being a crossover, you compromise on the practicality available in the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan. However, what you lose in space you gain in efficiency and driveability.

Reasons to consider a T-Cross as a used car purchase include:

  • Volkswagen build quality
  • Frugal engines
  • Low running costs
  • Decent boot size
  • Excellent safety rating

Engines and Driving Experience

Orange Volkswagen T-Cross front

Sharing some of its underpinnings with the exceptional Volkswagen Polo, it's no surprise that the T-Cross offers a refined and comfortable driving experience. The raised ride height is an appealing trait of SUVs, and is complemented by excellent visibility, making it easy to navigate confined spaces.

Petrol

  • 1.0-litre: 94bhp, 0 to 62mph in 11.6 seconds, up to 49.2mpg
  • 1.0-litre: 108bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10.8 seconds, up to 49.1mpg
  • 1.5-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.5 seconds, up to 47.7mpg

Diesel

  • 1.6-litre: 109bhp, 0 to 62mph in 11.6 seconds, up to 54.3mpg

A manual gearbox is standard fit on the smaller petrol engines, although a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox was available from new. You sacrifice a bit of fuel economy with the DSG, but it makes up for this with seamless acceleration and a smooth drive.

Practicality and Running Costs

Orange Volkswagen T-Cross boot

Despite its modest proportions, the T-Cross is reasonably practical inside. Whilst the boot may not be the biggest in its class, it still offers between 385 and 455 litres thanks to the sliding rear bench. Fold the rear seats down and there is 1,281 litres of space, which can be further enhanced by folding the front passenger seat down.

With the rear bench pushed as far back as it can go, legroom is more than ample for children or teenagers. Grown adults will find there's a decent amount of headroom, although they'll likely find there isn't enough legroom to remain comfortable over prolonged journeys.

The T-Cross doesn't exceed insurance group 17 (out of 50), which should prove beneficial come renewal time. Affordable servicing and maintenance is available through Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Orange Volkswagen T-Cross interior

Typical of a Volkswagen, the T-Cross has a logically laid out interior design that is finished with a host of quality materials. An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen features as standard across the range, offering intuitive navigation of the media system and vehicle settings.

Standard equipment is very good for the most part, with Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and air-conditioning included on entry-level models. Top-spec models come with a digital instrument cluster and luxuries such as parking sensors and LED headlights, so they're worth keeping an eye out for.

Scoring 97 and 86 percent for adult and child occupant protection respectively, it's no surprise that the T-Cross scored five stars during its Euro NCAP crash test. Other features that helped it achieve this include:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Blind spot detection
  • 'e-call' emergency call service
  • Tyre pressure warning system
  • Hill start assist

Is the Volkswagen T-Cross right for me?

Compact SUVs are popular because of their practicality and efficiency, so it's no surprise that the T-Cross has sold so well since it was released in 2019. With a quality interior and low running costs, the T-Cross makes sense as a family car for those who don't need something too big.

There are plenty of alternatives to look at in this segment. The Citroën C3 AIRCROSS will cost less to buy and run, but isn't quite as well made inside. Alternatively, you have the likes of the Ford Puma and Renault Captur, which are more engaging to drive.
