Used Hyundai Santa Fe for sale

Produced since 2000, the Santa Fe is the flagship SUV of the Hyundai range. Here we are looking at the fourth-generation model, which has been in production since 2018.

Being the flagship, the Santa Fe is the largest SUV in the Hyundai range, with the Tucson being the mid-sized alternative, and the Kona being the smallest offering of the trio.

You'd hope being the range-topper the Santa Fe will come with all the bells and whistles of what you need in an SUV. First impressions are good as the Santa Fe offers:

  • Seven seats as standard
  • A capacious cabin
  • Lots of standard specification

Read on below to see what makes the Santa Fe a decent choice when buying used.

Engines and Driving Experience

Fourth Gen Santa Fe Exterior

The Santa Fe is a brute of an SUV, having seven seats as standard you kind of expect it, that and the fact it's the largest Hyundai SUV you can buy.

To power such bulk, the only engine option available is a punchy 2.2-litre diesel engine with 197bhp. However, it's available with either a manual or automatic transmission, along with two-wheel or four-wheel drive. The 0 to 62mph time takes around 9.5 seconds, although it's slightly quicker or slightly slower depending on gearbox and driven wheels opted for.

Those looking for a hybrid or plug-in hybrid can check out the facelifted Sante Fe Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid models, which came in 2020.

As for the overall Santa Fe driving experience, it's built more for comfort and refinement than sheer dynamics, although this is understandable due to the SUV's size and 7-seat practicality.

Practicality and Running Costs

Fourth Gen Santa Fe Boot

Practicality is decent in the Santa Fe. Being the largest SUV in the Hyundai range it was always going to be the case, and coming with seven seats as standard will appeal to those who want a sophisticated and stylish SUV rather than a somewhat plain 'people carrier'.

With all seven seats in use, boot space is only really good enough for a couple of hand luggage sized bags, but when in 5-seat mode a nice 547 litres of boot space becomes available, which increases to a vast 1,625 litres with the seats folded.

It's worth noting a Peugeot 5008, which is also a 7-seater has a much larger boot with five seats in use, offering a colossal 952 litres, rising to a van-like 2,150 litres with the seats folded.

Around 40mpg is possible for the Santa Fe, which is quite good considering the size. Servicing an be completed at any Evans Halshaw Hyundai dealership and shouldn't be too troublesome.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Fourth Gen Interior Santa Fe

Interior quality, fit and finish is good in the Santa Fe, but being the top SUV model it kind of has to be. The standard specification and kit levels are also very good and come with some sharp technology and safety kit too.

A 7-inch infotainment screen looks good in the centre of the dash and is complemented by a instrument cluster that mixes digital with analogue. The facelifted hybrid versions come with fully-digital dials.

SE models don't get sat-nav, but do get smartphone mirroring, which means you can link up maps so you don't really miss out on not having factory sat-nav. Head-up display and wireless charging are also available.

As for safety, the Santa Fe achieved a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test score, thanks to features in the range including:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Rear cross-traffic avoidance assist
  • Blind Spot Detection system
  • Rear Occupancy Alert

Is the Hyundai Santa Fe right for me?

In the popular market of SUVs, the Santa Fe offers buyers a sound alternative to the somewhat plain people carrier, and gives a much more attractive SUV alternative.

As a smart and sophisticated large SUV, the Santa Fe is a credible offering, but it is outgunned in almost every aspect by the less expensive and more practical Peugeot 5008. The interior of the 5008 happens to be one of the best out there too.

However, the Santa Fe offers a more rugged approach, which some buyers will find more appealing than that of the Peugeot.
