Blue Honda Civic Driving Front

The Honda Civic is a hatchback that makes for a great all-rounder and is one of Honda's best-known and most popular vehicles. SUVs such as the Honda HR-V and CR-V have become the go-to for many families across the UK, but the Civic is still a great option that comes at a lower cost.

Introduced in the early 1970s, the Civic is now in its tenth generation and competes well in the highly-competitive family hatchback class thanks to a range of great features, such as:

  • High levels of practicality and reliability
  • Good driving dynamics
  • Reasonable running costs
  • A simple engine line-up

Discover the benefits of the Honda Civic in more detail below.

Engines and Driving Experience

Blue Honda Civic Exterior Rear

You'll have a choice from a simple engine line-up when buying a Civic:

Petrol

  • 1.0-litre: 124bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10.8 seconds, 47.9mpg WLTP combined.
  • 1.5-litre: 180bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.2 seconds, 46.3mpg WLTP combined.

Diesel

  • 1.6-litre: 118bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10.2 seconds, 53.5mpg WLTP combined.

Both automatic and manual gearboxes can be found on the used market, giving you the choice dependent upon your personal preference. Whilst the diesel is slightly more frugal, the petrol engines are also efficient and are more than capable of completing long journeys on a regular basis.

The ride is refined and pleasant, eating up bumps and cracks in the road with relative ease. However, the high-level of comfort means that exciting driving dynamics have been sacrificed, unless you opt for the sportier Civic Type-R, that is.

Practicality and Running Costs

Honda Civic Boot

Coming with 478 litres of boot space in its standard configuration (slightly less if opting for the Sport or Sport Plus specification), the Civic outclasses many of its rivals when it comes to transporting luggage. If you need more space, simply drop the rear seats and you'll be provided with a hearty 1,580 litres of space to play with.

There's plenty of room throughout the cabin as well, leg and headroom allow most to travel in comfort, but taller occupants may find their head brushing against the roof lining when sat in the back. Five doors as standard allows for the easy fitment of child seats to the ISOFIX mounting points in the rear of the car.

Getting insured won't come at too much of a cost either, ranging from groups 15 to 22 (out of 50). All Evans Halshaw dealerships are also well-equipped to take care of any servicing or maintenance requirements.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Honda Civic Interior

The Civic's interior feels well built and of a high quality. Whilst it doesn't possess the most eye-catching of designs, the dashboard performs well in terms of functionality, with all controls being within reach for the driver.

Entry-level models come with features such as an automatic high beam support system, adaptive cruise control and a 5-inch infotainment system as standard. Opting for a higher specification can see you receive further bits of kit including GARMIN navigation and a larger 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

In terms of safety, the Civic received the full five-star safety rating when it underwent Euro NCAP's safety tests thanks to a range of available equipment, such as:

  • Parking sensors
  • Brake Assist (BA)
  • Lane Departure and Lane Keep assist systems
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Hill Start Assist (HSA)

Is the Honda Civic right for me?

If you're looking for a well-equipped hatchback that provides a good level of space for your family as well as low running costs, then the Honda Civic will be right up your street.

Alternatives include the uber-popular Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra; two vehicles that are great value for money. If you're working with a larger budget and fancy something more luxurious then the Audi A3 or Volkswagen Golf may be better suited.

Nonetheless, the Honda Civic has its own set of features that have made it into the popular car it is today.
