Engines and Driving Experience
In a world where everything seems to be going electric, the 408 may tempt used buyers as it still offers petrol engines, along with plug-in hybrid versions too, which are ideal for those who don't want to go fully-electric just yet.
The standard petrol version uses a frugal 1.2-litre engine producing 128bhp, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Performance isn't rapid, but it's not exactly slow with 0 to 62mph taking 10.4 seconds.
The plug-in hybrid variants offer more punch when it comes to performance, as well as more economy. You'll be able to find 178bhp or 222bhp used versions, with 0 to 62mph times dropping to 8.1 and 7.8 seconds respectively.
All versions are perfectly quick enough for regular traffic, with the plug-in hybrids feeling smooth and brisk as a bonus.
Practicality and Running Costs
There's plenty of space inside the 408, good for five people including the driver, although the middle rear seat is perhaps only suitable for a child, or an adult on a short journey.
There's a plenty of boot space in the 408, with 536 litres on offer. This is reduced to 471 in the plug-in hybrid versions, although this is still plenty for most, so you shouldn't struggle with suitcases and the family food shop.
Economy is excellent with the petrol versions seeing up to 48mpg, whilst the plug-in hybrids offer around 40 miles of electric range, and over 200mpg, although we'd expect it dropping a little lower than that with mixed driving.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Peugeot have been making striking interiors for a while now thanks to their excellent i-Cockpit. The 408 extends this reputation and features a cool 3D instrument cluster, complemented by a 10-inch fully-digital infotainment screen.
Unlike many cars of this era, those looking for a used car with a more traditional dashboard will like the way the 408 still uses this orthodox layout somewhat, rather than the 'iPad-like dash' some manufacturers seem to go with.
The i-Cockpit experience still ensures the driver feels cocooned nicely.
