Hyundai i20 Driving

The supermini class is full of excellent choices for consumers looking to buy used. The Hyundai i20, available from 2015 to 2020 happens to be one of them.

Smart looks, decent build quality and a 5-year warranty from new mean it does look good against its competition, which includes the best-selling Ford Fiesta, as well as the Vauxhall Corsa, Renault Clio and VW Polo.

On first impressions, the i20 offers:

  • Sharp looks
  • Good build quality
  • Hatchback, Coupe and Active versions
  • Surprising space
  • Low running costs

Learn more about the i20 below, and find out if it's the right used supermini for you.

Engines and Driving Experience

Hyundai i20 Exterior, Front

Easy to drive, the i20 will not intimidate drivers, thanks to light controls and soft suspension, giving both driver and passengers a comfortable and pleasant experience onboard an i20.

The i20 is available in the more commonly found 5-door hatch, and is joined by the sleeker 3-door Coupe version, along with a more rugged Active model, which is a sort of mini crossover. They all feature a peppy 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, with 98bhp.

This engine is our top pick, as it completes the 0 to 62mph time in just over 10 seconds (the fastest in the range) and can return over 50mpg. There is an older 1.2-litre non-turbo as well as a 1.4-litre diesel, but they are both slower. The diesel does return over 60mpg though.

Practicality and Running Costs

Hyundai i20 Boot Open

Boot space is good with 326 litres in the 5-door hatchback and Active models, whilst the sleeker Coupe version has slightly less space with 311 litres. If we're honest, the Coupe is just a posh name for the car, which in reality is just a 3-door hatchback version.

For those wanting a bit more practicality, the 5-door hatch is the best bet. The Active, however, features raised 20mm suspension and roof rails, useful for sports equipment and the like. The Active model is ideal for those who may want to venture off road - if ever so slightly, without having to buy an SUV or 4x4, which will warranty more cost.

As for running costs themselves, either i20 should see around 50mpg. Servicing won't break the bank, as the 1.0-litre engine is nice and simplistic. This can be carried out at any Evans Halshaw Hyundai dealer.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Hyundai i20 Infotainment

Smart and simple describes the interior of the i20 range. Crisp clear dials are joined by a striking, central infotainment screen on mid-2018 S Connect models.

These models also feature air-con, reversing camera, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Higher-spec SE models from 2018 onwards get rear parking sensors and cruise control as standard, too.

We would opt for the later models if you can, as you are treated to better kit and it's likely you'll get the remainder of the 5-year warranty too.

Safety is pretty good in i20 models, receiving 4 out of 5 stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests back when it was tested in 2015. Each i20 comes with:

  • Electronic stability control
  • Six airbags

Whilst features in the range include:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keeping assistance

Is the Hyundai i20 right for me?

If you are in the market for a supermini that looks great, offers a good driving experience and is cheap to run, the Hyundai i20 cannot be ignored.

The Fiesta is still better to drive, and the Clio may offer a less serious interior, but the i20 still offers an impressive standard specification, which other competitors simple cannot match.

A large boot, decent interior space and fully-digital dials, even in the entry-level spec (extra in a Clio) mean the i20 certainly aces the market leaders in certain areas.

It will all filter to personal taste, but the i20 is definitely worth checking out. It may be an outside-of-the-box choice, but one that will impress those who don't want to follow the crowd.
