Introducing the Hyundai Kona
Hyundai have firmly established themselves as a car manufacturer that provides high quality cars for a reasonable outlay. And with the rise in the popularity of SUVs, it's no surprise to see the South Koreans have entered the fray with their own take on the crossover concept; the Hyundai Kona.
While the Kona represents a new design direction for the company, under the bonnet the same dependable engineering ticks over inconspicuously. Whereas the exterior, despite its Hyundai family-likeness has a European familiarity about it.
A raft of new technology and drivetrains have found their way under the assertive-looking body shell, meaning you're investing in more than just a pretty face.
Design and Practicality
There's no denying that the Kona has that unmistakable rugged Crossover look, what with the raised ride height, chunkier tyres, and plastic cladding around the wheel arches. However, it's also one of the most distinctive thanks to its assertive front-end design and sharp features.
With a futuristic design approach, the slimmed-down Daytime Running Lights also incorporate the indicator. There's also a wide range of eye-catching colours to choose from that are complemented by the bold alloy wheel designs.
The driver’s seat is height adjustable with rear seats splitting 60:40. This hatchback crossover offers generous boot space of 361-litres, giving you all the room you need to do your big shop all in one go, without any hassle.
Technology and Safety
The all-new Kona comes with a high level of safety equipment. Featuring Driver Attention Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, Hill Start Assist Control, and Downhill Brake Control, as standard.
The Infotainment system with DAB radio and Bluetooth® technology keeps you connected and entertained whilst you’re on the move. USB and AUX options enable you to play your music your way. With the higher spec you also get rear parking sensors, and rear a camera. The 7-inch touchscreen supplied includes Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™.
The already crisp sound system is upgraded as you go up the range by adding a high end KRELL premium audio system. Controlled via an 8” touchscreen, this powerful 8-speaker system comes with an external amplifier and subwoofer.
Economy and Performance
There are two petrol engines to choose from, although you can opt for a plug-in hybrid variant or even an all-electric Kona.
The standard 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine isn't huge, but with 119 bhp and a good wedge of torque available throughout the rev range, it's surprisingly peppy. Better yet, you should be able to achieve 54.3 mpg on a combined cycle.
The larger 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, available only on the Premium GT model, produces 176 bhp. This four-cylinder upgrade has more grunt than the standard offering, with 195 ft/lbs available at 1500 rpm and the ability to reach 0-60 mph in an impressive 7.9 seconds.
A 6-speed manual is standard, although there is a clever 7-speed dual-clutch automatic for those who want seamless gear shifts.
