Compact. Efficient. Practical. The Chery Tiggo 7 ticks a lot of boxes for many drivers - especially those in the market for a family-friendly SUV with hybrid fuel efficiency.

The Chery Tiggo 7 is one of the latest Chery SUVs to hit the UK streets. But it’s not the 'top model'. For some, that offers a big advantage: the Tiggo 7 comes in at a much lower price point than other Chery models - and indeed other similar SUVs in its class.

So, if you’re looking for a modern hybrid SUV that combines comfort and practicality with high-level technology throughout, the Chery Tiggo 7 could be the answer.

Read on to find out more about this standout model.

Engines and Driving Experience

There are two main Chery Tiggo 7 variants: petrol and super hybrid (plug-in). Let’s explore each in turn and then see how the Tiggo 7 stacks up on the road.

The classic internal combustion engine version of the Chery Tiggo 7 comes equipped with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine. This offers a strong 145bhp and 203lb ft of torque. The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission gives this variant a fuel economy of roughly 40mpg - not industry-leading, true, but a strong start for most everyday drivers.

Then, there’s the super hybrid variant. This comes with a slightly smaller 1.5-litre super hybrid engine/motor but a stronger combined horsepower (around 198bhp) and torque (269lb ft). The total range with both electric and petrol is an excellent 745 miles, supported by an extremely fast-charging battery.

Neither the Chery Tiggo 7 petrol variant nor hybrid models lead the way in power or fuel efficiency. But they both offer a dependable driving experience for everyday users. The vehicle feels lively and especially smooth when cruising motorways, even if it’s not going to win any prizes for off-road supremacy.

Practicality and Running Costs

The Tiggo 7 is marketed as a compact SUV. It’s definitely on the smaller end of the SUV spectrum - it has 5 seats and a relatively modest 565 litres of boot space (there are 484 litres in the PHEV version). But what it lacks in space it makes up for in other areas.

The Tiggo 7 doesn’t feel especially small. Most families will fit comfortably in the cabin and enjoy good visibility. Overall, the cabin is modern and relatively well-equipped. However, some customers note that cabin storage isn’t what it could be. Similar models like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage tend to offer more creative interior storage solutions.

So, how much does it cost to run a Chery Tiggo 7? Well, it depends on the exact variant. The classic petrol’s 40mpg rating is decent, although real-world mpg ratings are often slightly lower.

The hybrid version is where real savings can be made. Official combined consumption figures show an extremely high 256.8mpg - although some tests have achieved over 300mpg. That's because many miles can be done on electric alone - you can comfortably commute and carry out everyday city driving without needing to fill up your tank. Your fuel bills could be very low if you commit to charging regularly.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The interior of the Chery Tiggo 7 offers a comfortable passenger experience. Synthetic leather upholstery presides throughout, and 60:40 split-fold rear seats offer extra cargo space when needed. For more luxurious touches, look for the Summit trim.

Technology is strong here, too. The Tiggo 7 may not have all the bells and whistles of a cutting-edge SUV coming out this year, but it competes well for its age. Essentially, it has everything you’d expect from an SUV in this range: dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 'Hello Chery' voice assistant, electric power steering, and a clear, powerful Sony audio system for all your favourite tunes.

The Chery Tiggo 7 offers a broad range of safety specs, too. Drivers can feel confident knowing they’re supported by strong driver assist features common in modern SUVs, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warnings, blind-spot detection, and a 540-degree camera view with parking sensors. There are multiple airbags throughout.

Overall, the Chery Tiggo 7 received a five-star Euro NCAP rating.

Is the Tiggo 7 right for me?

If you’re looking for truly groundbreaking, best-in-class dynamics, the Chery Tiggo 7 might not be for you. But if you’re looking for an affordable and reliable family-sized SUV with decent fuel economy, you're in the right place. The Tiggo 7 is well worth a test drive.

The Chery Tiggo 7 offers good value for money, and we’re confident you’ll feel very comfortable on short commutes and longer road trips alike.
