Vans are the workhorses on our roads. Used for all sorts of professions, whether it be delivering parcels, transporting supplies or carrying tools, a van is a vital part of any large or small business.

But, in a world where everything seems to be getting more expensive, there are still some vans which shouldn't break the bank when it comes to insuring them. Of course, personal circumstances will alter any insurance quote, with your age, no claims, where you keep it, where you live, and so on, altering the premium.

However, generally, those listed below tend to be some of the cheapest vans to insure. And, for reference, insurance groups range from 1 to 50, with 1 being the cheapest and 50 being the most expensive.

Citroën Berlingo

Citroën certainly knows a thing or two when it comes to building vans, especially compact ones. That's why the French giants have sold millions of Berlingo vans since its introduction in 1996.

The Berlingo may be compact, but it can still carry a decent load size. Pre 2016 models tend to be insurance groups 1 to 5, whilst those after 2016 usually falling into insurance groups 21 to 33. Newer vehicles tend to higher insurance groups with their enhanced features, but even when in groups 21 to 33, the Berlingo is still pretty reasonable to insure.

Used older models will naturally be cheaper to insure, too, and feature in the super low 1 to 5 groups, but as mentioned, even later models will save you money when comparing against competitors.

Ford Fiesta Van

Ford Fiesta Van Parked

The Ford Fiesta car is a bona fide icon, with Ford sadly discontinuing the car in 2023. However, whilst on sale, Ford also offered the Fiesta van, which surprisingly has been on sale at the same time as the car, which was launched back in 1976.

It may well just be a Fiesta car with the rear seats removed, and the rear windows removed, but if you want a 'van' that drives like a car, then the Fiesta takes some beating. The Fiesta van is also good for blending in, as it doesn't really stick out the way a van does, so if you require a more subtle van, this could be it. Insurance groups range from 21 to 29 for reference.

It's also worth noting that the Fiesta van's bigger sibling, the iconic Transit Custom is a panel van famed for its car-like driving experience, so if the Fiesta van is a tad small, the Transit Custom could be ideal for you, but it will cost more to insure due to its 23 to 50 insurance group ranking.

Peugeot Partner

Today, the Peugeot Partner is another fine compact van. But did you know that the Partner is essentially the same van as the Citroën Berlingo?

Don't worry though, this has been the case for years. In fact, it was a joint venture to begin with, and has been the case since their introduction in 1996. Today, both Citroën and Peugeot fall under the Stellantis group of companies, so makes even more sense.

What this means though, is that no matter your choice, you're going to get a great compact van, that won't cost the earth to insure. All you have to do is decide which badge and design language you like better. Insurance groups range from 23 to 36 for newer Partner models, or older vans can be as low as Insurance Group 5.

Renault Trafic

Renault Trafic Driving

Despite being a medium sized van, the Renault Trafic is fairly reasonable to insure. Pre 2016 models are cheap to insure due to their insurance group 3 to 12 rankings. Later models range from 25 to 47, so yes some Trafic models will be much more expensive to insure, but there are models out there that sit in the middle range grouping, which for a mid-sized van is pretty reasonable and logical.

The Trafic has been around since 1980, so it's another van in our list with a strong and dependable legacy. Interestingly, it's the only medium-sized van in our selection, whilst all the others are more compact. So, if you're after more space for your business needs, whilst being able to insure it cheaper than competitively sized vans, the Renault Trafic should be on your shortlist.

Volkswagen Caddy

The Volkswagen Caddy is a van loved by private individuals and therefore has a significant and loyal following. To be fair, many Volkswagen vehicles have, so it makes sense that the vans follow suit.

The Caddy is compact, but does offer a more sophisticated feel than its competitors, which perhaps explains why it's got such a following. That, and it's cheap to insure, too, considering its more premium vibe with groupings falling in the mid-range of 26 to 31.

Unlike the vans mentioned above, the Caddy is a van which has quite the following when it comes to modifying, so you can see all sorts of cool used ones for sale, if you're looking for something specific.
