Toyota Proace City Front

The Toyota Proace City is a small van that's designed to be functional, versatile, and economical, making it suitable for urban areas, hence its name.

Introduced in 2016, it's one of the newer additions to the Toyota commercial range and was introduced to rival the likes of the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, and Vauxhall Combo, vans that all share the same platform.

But there are a range of reasons why a Proace City is a good choice, including:

  • A decent driving experience
  • Practical interior
  • Handy technology list
  • Efficient powertrains
  • All-electric option

Economy, Towing, and Performance

Toyota Proace City Rear

There's no confusing list of powertrains when it comes to finding a suitable Proace City, as most examples will come in one of two forms.

Firstly, there's a 1.5-litre diesel that produces either 99bhp or 128bhp, with both variants achieving just short of 50mpg. Manual gearboxes come as standard, but if you want a straightforward driving experience, an automatic gearbox is also available on higher powered variants.

Those that have eco-friendliness high on their list will favour the all-electric powertrain, which comes equipped with a 50kWh battery to offer a total driving range of up to 161 miles and charging times as little as 30 minutes.

In terms of towing, diesel variants can tow up to 1,500kg braked and up to 740kg unbraked, while all-electric examples offer slightly less, with 750kg of both unbraked and braked towing capacity.

Bodystyles, Payload, and Capacity

Toyota Proace City Load Area

As you'll typically find in this class, the Proace City is available in different body lengths to suit a wider audience.

Short wheelbase variants (L1) offer a maximum load length of 1,817mm, while long wheelbase variants (L2) have an increased 2,167mm of load length. Load width and heights are almost identical, so there are no gains to be made in that department, but L2 variants certainly suit those that need more space.

Payloads across the range are towards the top of the class, with diesel variants topping out at 1,000kg. This obviously depends on the exact specification, so double-check the exact model you're looking at to make sure it's sufficient.

If you do like the look of an electric variant, you won't have to sacrifice too much in the way of practicality. Load lengths are almost identical, and overall payload is just slightly less at a maximum of 803kg, but this is to be expected on electric vans.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Toyota Proace City Interior

Step inside the Proace City, and you'll find an interior that's very car like in its setup, which is no bad thing as it means you can enjoy a layout that's clean, familiar, and ergonomic.

Go for an earlier example, and you may find that the interior feels a little aged, but more recent models feature the latest in technology, including an 8-inch infotainment system that allows you to integrate your smartphone's features through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Entry-level models offer enough kit to see you through a working day with ease, with the likes of automatic headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, and DAB radio as standard. Mid to top-of-the-range examples take tech to the next level with the likes of Go Navigation being available, allowing you to find the right balance.

Safety equipment also leaves little to be desired, with examples including:

  • A reversing camera with front parking sensors
  • Lane Departure Alert with steering control
  • Pre-collision assist
  • Driver attention alert
  • Adaptive cruise control

Is the Toyota Proace City right for me?

The Proace City is a vehicle that you can rely on to complete your daily duties in comfort. Being a Toyota, it comes with plenty of tech and is built to a very high standard, so you know it can get the job done.

Competition is rife with great options though, so it's worth checking alternatives before committing. As previously mentioned, it's almost identical to the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, and Vauxhall Combo. You may also want to look further afield at other popular options, including the Ford Transit Courier and Volkswagen Caddy.
