The Skoda Yeti is a popular crossover SUV with a generous amount of cabin space and a surprisingly engaging driving experience. Unfortunately, as of 2017, the Yeti has been chopped from the Czech manufacturer's range, being replaced by the slightly larger Karoq.

Engines and Driving Experience

Crossover SUVs are often based off of the same underpinnings as their smaller counterparts, resulting in many of them having hatchback-like handling. The Skoda Yeti is no different, but manages to do so in a smooth manner with very little road noise or discomfort.

A range of petrol and diesel engines are available. To make things easier, we've listed the available engines below:

Petrol (TSI)

1.2-litre: 110bhp, up to 51mpg.
1.4-litre: 120bhp, up to 41mpg.
1.8-litre: 157bhp, up to 35mpg.

Diesel (TDI)

1.6-litre: 103bhp, up to 61mpg.
2.0-litre: 108, 140, 150 or 170bhp, up to 62mpg.

All are capable of providing you with the highly-rated driving experience that comes with the Yeti, but the larger engines are more suitable if carrying heavier loads, or towing up to 750kg unbraked.

Practicality and Running Costs

The boxy, van-like exterior makes life easier when loading cargo, providing a simply-shaped 416-litre space in the boot to fit larger items such as pushchairs and camping gear. The Yeti's party trick comes in the form of removeable rear seats which, when removed, provide a colossal 1,760 litres of empty space.

The Yeti also has impressive off-road capabilities, especially if you opt for a four-wheel drive variant, which is ideal for tackling rough country tracks or dealing with icy surfaces during the winter.

Running costs are also reasonable, with the average insurance group being around 17 (out of 50), rising up to 24 if you opt for the more powerful 170bhp variant. All Evans Halshaw dealerships are well-equipped to deal with any servicing or maintenance requirements.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

A refined cabin allows the driver to comfortably manage the controls of the Yeti via the satisfying physical buttons, or the touchscreen infotainment system if you opt for a higher specification example.

Entry-level examples can lack some of the equipment we've come to expect from a modern vehicle, with most of the technology being optional when new. The good news is there are a number of used Yetis with these options, such as parking sensors, cruise control and satellite navigation.

Euro NCAP awarded the Skoda Yeti with the full five-star safety rating when inspecting the vehicle, which is reassuring when out and about with the family, thanks to a range of safety features, including:

Is the Skoda Yeti right for me?

Very practical and full of character, this Yeti is more adorable than abominable. Skoda have ensured the occupants arrive at their destination in a safe manner, whilst allowing the driver to have an enjoyable experience.

If you're after something with a bit more kit as standard, we'd recommend taking a look at a used Nissan Qashqai or Renault Kadjar, which feature more contemporary styling, but take note of the extra cost. The Dacia Duster is also a shout if you're working with a tight budget but fancy something newer.
