Fiat Panda Driving Front

The Fiat Panda is a 5-door city car that possesses bundles of character and a generous amount of boot space. It's a great alternative to Fiat's other city car, the 500, or the larger Tipo if you don't need the extra room.

Introduced in the 1980s, the Panda has become one of Fiat's best-known models, thanks to a range of features that make it competitive on the city car market, such as:

  • Quirky mini-SUV styling
  • Low running costs
  • Variety of engines to choose from
  • 4x4 availability

Discover the benefits of the Fiat Panda in more detail below.

Engines and Driving Experience

Fiat Panda Rear Driving

The most recent Pandas come with a variety of engines to choose from. To make things easier, we've listed them below:

Petrol

  • 0.9-litre TwinAir: 69bhp and up to 51.4mpg combined.
  • 0.9-litre TwinAir 4X4: 84bhp and up to 40.9mpg combined.
  • 1.2-litre: 68bhp and up to 42.2mpg combined.

Mild-Hybrid

  • 1.0-litre: 69bhp and up to 52.3mpg combined.

A number of other engines have come and gone during the Panda's lifetime which can be found on used examples, including a less common 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel that can achieve up to 60.1mpg. Due to its small engine sizes, the Panda doesn't offer punchy performance, but it's comfortable and can soak up bumps and cracks in the road fairly easily.

Practicality and Running Costs

Fiat Panda Interior Rear

Whilst it comes with SUV-inspired exterior styling, practicality is still similar to that of other city cars. Due to its tall body structure, headroom within the Panda is good. However, taller occupants may struggle when it comes to legroom, especially if sat in the rear.

225 litres of boot space can be found as standard, but this can be adjusted thanks to the rear sliding bench, which sees overall space increase to 260 litres when slid forward. But the Panda's versatile boot shape is more practical than competitors, making it easier to load and unload luggage.

The small engines mean the costs of running a Panda are minimal. Insurance starts at group 3 (out of 50), increasing to group 12 depending on specification. All Evans Halshaw dealerships are also well-equipped to deal with any servicing or maintenance requirements.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Fiat Panda Interior

The Panda comes with a more traditional interior design as standard, with a number of physical knobs and buttons present as opposed to the touchscreen interface that many modern cars lean towards. A Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system can be found on used examples if you fancy something more modern.

In terms of standard equipment, the Panda provides a no-frills approach. Electric windows and a 4-speaker stereo system can be found on entry-level models, whilst higher specifications possess further features such as smartphone integration and roof rails.

A number of safety features can also be found on the Panda, including:

  • Front and side airbags
  • Rear ISOFIX mounting points
  • Seatbelt reminder

Is the Fiat Panda right for me?

The Fiat Panda is a great option if you're in the market for a charismatic city car that is inexpensive to run.

If you're after a more conventional city car, the Volkswagen Up! and Hyundai i10 offer a range of excellent features and are great places to start. The Dacia Duster is also superb value for money and features a similar rugged design similar to that of the Panda.
