Renault Kangoo Maxi

The Renault Kangoo is one of the brand's smallest vans, along with the electric car-based Renault Zoe Van.

Like many vans on the market, the Renault Kangoo shares its foundations with that of the Mercedes-Benz Citan and Nissan NV250.

This generation has been around from 2008 till 2022, when it was replaced by an all-electric Renault Kangoo.

If you're after a straight-forward van that's had a dependable and successful stint as a small van, then the Kangoo offers the basics well, along with highlights mentioned below.

  • Good standard equipment
  • Roomy
  • Easy to drive
  • Good selection of versions
  • Useful sliding doors on maxi version

Economy, Towing, and Performance

Renault Kangoo Rear

As a small van, the Kangoo is decent when it comes to fuel economy. There's the option of a few diesel engines (most common) along with a petrol version, whilst newer models are going fully-electric.

Diesel engines will return over 60mpg, whilst the petrol is capable of over 40mpg.

If you're wanting a Kangoo for towing purposes, up to 690kg is possible with an unbraked trailer, whilst up to 1,050kg is possible with a braked trailer.

As for overall performance, the engines have been produced for a while now. These offer dependable and smooth driving, and the torque helps when carrying heavier loads or towing via a trailer.

Bodystyles, Payload, and Capacity

Renault Kangoo Load Area

There's multiple choice in terms of bodystyles when looking at used Renault Kangoo models. There are standard bodies, Maxi bodies and also crew van bodystyles.

Payloads therefore depend on the bodystyle of the Renault Kangoo you're looking at, and will vary between 671kg and 800kg.

This is the same for capacity, with loading lengths up to 2,115mm available, with loading heights topping out at 1,129mm. Load widths are between 1,141mm and 1,219mm.

When looking for a used Kangoo, be sure to double-check if you're using the van for a specific loading purpose, as many will be similar, but some will be more practical than others.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Renault Kangoo Interior

Interior quality of the Kangoo is okay, but its Mercedes-Benz Citan sibling rival offers that little bit more in the quality department. It does offer plenty of comfort for a van though.

Technology is looking a little dated, although the newer model has been transformed somewhat.

Later models are the best bet, from 2021, with standard technology including DAB and USB connectivity, along with an alarm, electric windows and mirrors.

Electronic stability control and hill-start assist help with the safety aspect of the Kangoo, but later versions feature a better selection of safety kit, whilst early models are pretty basic.

Is the Renault Kangoo right for me?

If you're after a fairly decent yet simplistic compact van, then the fact Mercedes-Benz choose to use the foundations of the Renault Kangoo, well, it kind of tells you it should be pretty sound as a van.

The Mercedes-Benz Citan is essentially the same, just with added polish. A quality alternative will be the Ford Transit Connect.
