The Nissan Micra is a popular supermini that has been aimed at younger drivers, or smaller families that prioritise affordable running costs.

This generation of Micra, which was in production between 2010 and 2016, continued where its predecessors left off by offering a well-rounded package that was easy to drive and loaded with useful technology. Not only that, but it built on previous models by boasting better refinement and superior safety equipment.

Here's a brief overview of why the Micra makes a fine used car purchase:

  • Peppy and efficient engines
  • Easy to manoeuvre
  • Low running costs
  • Spacious interior
  • Comfortable to drive

Engines and Driving Experience

Although the Micra feels comfortable and stable on the open road, it really excels when it enters town. This is because the steering and clutch are light, while the excellent visibility really helps when parking in confined spaces. Thanks to the peppy nature of the engines, the Micra can exploit gaps in traffic with ease.

There are only two petrol engines available, mainly because Nissan believed they were efficient enough to justify not having a diesel. The basic 1.2-litre engine produces 79bhp and can return over 56mpg without too much issue.

On the other hand, there is a supercharged version of the same unit, which produces 99bhp and offers more flexible performance from lower down in the rev-range. Despite its power advantage, it can return close to 70mpg.

Practicality and Running Costs

Because Nissan essentially stuck a wheel at each corner of the car, the Micra is surprisingly roomy inside for a supermini. In addition, it's only available as a 5-door, which makes gaining access to the rear convenient and easy. The Micra does fall short on elbow width if you plan on carrying three adults in the back, but it's hardly an issue for shorter journeys.

There's 265 litres of boot space at your disposal, which isn't quite as much as the Fiesta of the same generation (290 litres), but it can still carry the weekly food shop with no issue. Fold the seats flat and you'll get 1,132 litres to play with; the rear bench can be flipped forward to create a perfectly flat loading bay, for added convenience.

Annual premiums should be low given that the Micra doesn't exceed insurance group 9 (50 being the highest). Servicing and maintenance should be inexpensive, too. Fixed price servicing is available through our Evans Halshaw Nissan retailers and will help to keep costs down.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Typical of Nissan, the dashboard and centre console are well-thought out and simple to use. The materials aren't as good as the Micra's successor as you'd expect, but soft touch plastics feature in all the right places.

Entry-level Visia models get electric front windows, USB connectivity and electronic stability control. It's worth stepping up to the mid-range Acenta model, which comes with alloy wheels, cruise control, automatic headlights and rain sensors.

Extra luxuries can be found in the N-TEC Micra, which includes rear parking sensors with a piece of tech called 'Parking Slot Measurement' that helps you find a suitable parking space. Top spec Tekna models get a touchscreen sat-nav, automatic wipers, and keyless start.

The Micra is available with the following safety features:

  • Six airbags
  • Electronic stability control
  • ABS (anti-lock braking system)
  • Traction control

Is the Nissan Micra right for me?

If you're a young driver, or have a growing family, and are looking for an affordable everyday supermini that is efficient and easy to drive, then you won't go far wrong with the Micra. Better yet, good examples can be bought for a reasonable outlay, meaning they represent excellent value for money.

There's plenty of rivals to consider in this segment. The Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa of the same generation were (and still are) class leaders for a reason, while the likes of the Volkswagen Polo are perfect if want something a bit more premium.
