Hyundai are no strangers when it comes to the city car segment, with their second generation i10 consistently ranking among the best sellers across Europe since its introduction in 2014. Well, Hyundai want to place themselves firmly on the throne with their all-new i10, which they promise will make a big impression despite coming in a small package.
When Hyundai say everything is all-new on the third generation i10, they aren't kidding: Bold new-look, fresh interior design, better connectivity, and an enhanced driving experience; everything has been taken to the next level in one way or another, which is a very exciting prospect indeed.
Hyundai have also kept it simple with the all-new i10's specification, because there is only three trim levels to choose from: SE, SE Connect and Premium. With prices starting from £12,495, you'll be amazed by what you get for your money; read on to find out more.
It's got the look; you know the one
Going into its third generation, the all-new i10's exterior design has completely evolved, offering bigger proportions and a sharper overall appearance. Although many of you reading won't be too bothered by the wider body (20mm) and the longer wheelbase (40mm), you will be interested to know this translates to a larger interior space and a more composed driving experience.
The exterior makeover is certainly eye-catching, what with the sleek edges and soft surfaces leaving a positive impression. Features such as daytime-running lights are complemented by the dynamic slatted black front grille and quirky selection of available alloy wheels. On top of that, all-new i10 is available in a variety of different colours, with an option available for a two tone roof on the Premium specification:
Solid paint finishes
- Polar White
- Tomato Red
- Phantom Black
- Star Dust
- Sleek Silver
- Champion Blue
- Slate Blue
- Dragon Red
- Aqua Turquoise
Big technology, small package
Unsurprisingly, the interior design is as crisp and well-thought out as the exterior appearance, with a host of new materials being introduced that are tasked with providing a premium ambiance for the driver and their passengers. Because the all-new i10 is now wider, it offers a full five seat configuration, which is a welcome bonus when you note a large chunk of other cars in the same segment only offer four-seats.
Standard equipment is very generous, with the 'SE' offering DAB radio with 3.8" display, Bluetooth, air-conditioning, electric windows, and cruise control. Opt for a higher spec and you get a host of desirable goodies, the most notable being the addition of an audio system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an 8" touchscreen.
Despite being a city car, Hyundai have loaded the all-new i10 with a host of driver aids and safety equipment. Standard equipment includes:
- Lane Keep Assist
- Driver Attention Alert
- High Beam Assist
- Forward Collision Warning System
- Lane Departure Warning System
- eCall (can automatically dial emergency services)
Mastered: The art of efficiency
Regulations have really tightened on manufacturers, yet this hasn't prevented Hyundai from providing the all-new i10 with a couple of engine choices that offer everyday flexibility and a remarkably low CO2 output; not to mention their impressive fuel efficiency.
A 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engine are available (offering 66 bhp and 82 bhp respectively), which both offer a good wedge of grunt from low-down in the rev-range, making the all-new i10 a solid performer in the depths of urban suburbia and on Britain's highways. Both engines can be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox; or if you want improved efficiency and more relaxed driving experience, then both engines can be paired with a super-slick 5-speed automatic transmission.
Because of the low emissions, the all-new i10 sits in a low VED band (F), and the BIK (benefit in kind) starts from 24%, making Hyundai's latest city car a very enticing option for business users who work around the city.
With the bold exterior design, exceptional interior, and generous levels of equipment, we have no doubt the all-new i10 will cement itself as one of the (if not the best) city cars in its class. And with that 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, the all-new i10 represents incredible value for money when you consider prices start from a reasonable £12,495.
