Introducing the Dacia Duster

The Dacia Duster has certainly made a big impression since its release in 2012, having won numerous awards with major publications such as WhatCar? and Top Gear magazine.

Take a step back and it becomes immediately clear why the Duster has sold so well. This is a fairly sized versatile SUV that looks good, has plenty of room for the whole family, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy or run - something that can still be said of the latest generation.

It isn't just the reasonable price tag that's impressive, because the Duster is robust and practical enough to tackle challenging terrain. On top of this, there's a generous level of equipment available, which makes the package all the more enticing.

Design and Practicality

Dacia Duster Rear

SUVs are the most popular cars in the UK at the moment because of the excellent practicality they offer. This is one of the areas the Duster really excels.

Throughout the cabin there is plenty of space, which means you'll never hear any grumbles from leggy passengers sat in the back. Because the seats are mounted relatively low and the roofline is high across the length of the vehicle, there's a generous amount of headroom too!

Behind the rear 60:40 split folding seats is 478 litres of boot space, which is more than enough for a family day out. Fold those seats down and there is a massive 1,623 litres at your disposal. There's also isofix anchor points as standard for child seats.

Technology and Safety

Dacia Duster Interior

Throughout the majority of the Duster range, there is a generous level of equipment available. The 'Essential' model comes with goodies such as manual air conditioning and DAB radio with Bluetooth.

Work your way up through the range and you start to get other modern mod cons such as cruise control, rear parking sensors and a sharp-looking multimedia system. In essence, each model represents incredible value for money and offers more than any car at this price point has the right to.

Expression, Journey, and Extreme models are available with Media Display, where you can access your favourite apps from the 8-inch touchscreen, including smartphone connection, radio, and an improved 4X4 Monitor system in the 4X4 version.

The Duster is well equipped where safety is concerned, with standard features including:

  • Auto high low beam lights
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • Driver and passenger airbags
  • Emergency brake assist
  • Hill start assist

Engines and Performance

Dacia Duster Side Static

The Duster is a versatile and flexible vehicle, so it's no surprise to see that there's a wide choice of engine configurations for you to choose from.

There are three petrol engines, which range between 100 bhp and 150 bhp depending on the model you choose. Opt for the 'Prestige' Duster and you can even spec it as a 4x4 for extra grip on loose surfaces. Mpg ranges between 39.2 and 46.3 depending on your choice.

Diesel engines are available from the 'Comfort' model onwards, and is derived from a proven 1.5-litre turbocharged unit. You don't need to go for the top spec Duster if you want 4x4 capability with this engine choice. Up to 57.7 mpg is achievable on a combined cycle.

All TCe models are available with an automatic gearbox as standard.

Finally, there is a bi-fuel option, which gives you the flexibility of using petrol or LPG (liquid petroleum gas) for reduced emissions and better economy.

Test Drive the Dacia Duster

Dacia Duster has been a strong performer over the years, and its desirability has only been increased by a well-executed facelift. In fact, Top Gear magazine's overview of the Duster is this: 'A far better car than it needs to be at the price, and we love it for that'. It's hard to argue with them.
