Introducing the Citroën SpaceTourer
The SpaceTourer is Citroën's answer to the problem of, unsurprisingly, lack of space. If you've got a large family or you're an active person who needs to take mountain bikes, canoes or other form of outdoor activity equipment on adventures far away, you're going to want to consider a SpaceTourer as your primary mode of transport.
Its flexible interior and seating for up to nine people makes it the perfect vehicle for those who need that little bit of extra room. And don't think that because it's primary goal is practicality that it's not stylish; the good-loooking exterior, while based on a van, is suitably modern and up to date.
It's got plenty of standard equipment too, with air conditioning and cruise control featuring on all models. With so much going for it, the Citroën SpaceTourer really could be all the car you ever need.
Design and Practicality
Design-wise the SpaceTourer has pleasingly boxy proportions, which make no real attempt to hide its goal of being the most practical family car possible. It still has body-coloured bumpers and alloy wheels (Flair model) plus LED daytime running lights to maintain a stylish presence on the road.
From a practicality standpoint, there aren't many (if any) passenger vehicles that can trump the SpaceTourer on interior roomniess or places to put people or things. There are two models, M (medium) and XL (extra large) if you need extended room and seating for up to nine occupants.
Versatility is another strong suit of the SpaceTourer. Being based on a commercial vehicle means that the boot capacity is similar to that of a medium-sized van when the third row of seats is folded down, creating a load area that is far, far superior to the one you'll find on any conventional car.
Technology and Safety
Citroën certainly haven't skimped on the equipment list for the SpaceTourer, with standard tech features including cruise control and automatic headlights, plus a colour touchscreen media system. Rear parking sensors are included as well, to help you when reversing into tight spaces.
One of the most impressive features is the option of 180-degree colour reversing camera that combines with front and rear parking sensors to make manoeuvring the SpaceTourer as easy as possible.
Safety equipment is comprehensive, and includes:
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Lane departure warning
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Road side recognition
All this equipment helped the SpaceTourer to achieve a full five-star safety rating from EuroNCAP.
Economy and Performance
Base model SpaceTourers come with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, and you can look forward to achieving around 40-47mpg on average if you go for one of those, which is more than decent for a vehicle of this size. The 150hp 2.0-litre engine is available on this model, too.
Top-spec models get 120hp, 150hp or 180hp 2.0-litre units depending on your preference and offer significantly improved performance with only a minor penalty in terms of fuel economy. You should be looking at around 36-41mpg with one of these models, and there are both manual and automatic options to choose from.
Out on the road the SpaceTourer performs as well as you would expect, doing its best work on the open road or on the motorway. At high speeds it settles down into a quiet and comfortable cruiser that's capable of transporting nine people to far-flung destinations with efficiency and ease.
