Hyundai i30 Exerior, Driving

Replacing the second-generation Hyundai i30, this third-generation model became available in 2017, receiving a facelift in 2020.

Naturally, the newer 2017 car received updated, sharper and more handsome styling, which again evolved further with the facelift. Whilst the i30 is still not as popular as the Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus, which have long been the market leaders of the family hatchback class, the i30 is a bit of a diamond in the rough due to a number of reasons, including:

  • Economical engines
  • Smart styling
  • An ultra-comforting motorway ride
  • Awesome performance models
  • A large boot

Engines and Driving Experience

Hyundai i30 Exterior, Rear, Driving

Around town the i30 is sound enough, but as for B-road thrills, a Ford Focus or VW Golf will reward the driver more in terms of feel. Get the i30 on a motorway though, and that's where it becomes impressive due to minimal wind and road noise. These make the i30 a superb long-distance cruiser, so if you do lots of motorway miles, the i30 could be the best option for you.

The N-Line models get updated suspension, which give it a distinctly more dynamic feeling over the standard models. Go for the performance N model, and it's a completely different story, being even more dynamic and a real competent hot hatch.

An entry-level 1.0-litre turbo will please those who want a relaxing overall drive, with decent mpg. It's not exactly quick, taking 11 seconds to get from 0 to 62mph, but you'll be averaging a wallet and purse-friendly 52mpg.

The 1.5-litre petrol will appeal to those wanting more excitement when they prod the throttle pedal, and with a reduced 8.9 seconds 0 to 62mph time, the N Line does just that, whilst still being able to return over 40mpg. The real fun can be had in the full-fat N model though, with 0 to 62mph happening in around 6 seconds, thanks to its 271bhp and a naughty exhaust note.

Practicality and Running Costs

Hyundai i30 Rear

In the previous-generation i30, 3-door, 5-door and estate bodystyles were available. This time round, the most popular 5-door bodystyle is joined by a Fastback version, which is a sort of small saloon version mixed with a sloping coupé roofline, presenting an i30 for those who care about eye-catching style.

The old 5-door hatchback model had a boot just two litres short of the VW Golf's 380-litre boot, but now the i30 trumps it with 395 litres. However, the sleeker Fastback model features a massive 450-litre boot, so we'd recommend going for that if you really want to stand out and require a huge boot.

As for running costs, Hyundai models feature a 5-year warranty as standard, so keep an eye out for used examples that have remaining warranty intact, which of course is a huge plus in terms of cheaper running costs.

As for servicing, some cars may also have service plans. This means servicing will also be less hassle and cost less, and can be carried out at any Evans Halshaw Hyundai retailer.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Hyundai i30 Interior

Interiors in the previous second-generation models offered a nice place to spend time, and featured blue backlighting to finish off the sound ambiance.

This later version is a progressive evolution with a general tidy-up, but to be honest the i30 didn't feel out of date and therefore this later model makes use of clear and crisp updated dials, along with a nice central infotainment screen. Materials feel of decent quality, and N Line models get a striking digital instrument screen in the cluster, which is complemented by contrasting dials for a smart overall presentation.

Facelifted cars offer more standard kit, with SE Connect entry-level cars getting a reverse camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and cruise control.

As for safety, the second-generation model scored five stars in the Euro NCAP safety ratings, and it's the same top score for the third generation, with the following kit appearing in the range:

  • Auto-dipping headlights
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Fatigue warning
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Blind-spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Is the Hyundai i30 right for me?

The i30 makes another strong case for itself when looking to poach buyers from the textbook family hatchbacks, which are the VW Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra.

It may not be as sharp to drive in standard form, but the N models are sure to tempt possible buyers of the Focus ST and Golf GTI away. This is because the boss of Hyundai N is Albert Biermann, who was formerly the head of BMW M, so he knows a fair bit when it comes to making exciting and great driving performance cars.

For those wanting great comfort, the standard i30 is a great motorway cruiser, complete with a big boot, perfect for family getaways. If you do large distances it may be the one to go for when buying used.
