Adding a bit more 'class' to the pickup segment, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class was designed to offer lifestyle buyers a mix of a vehicle that showcased a premium image, whilst not breaking sweat when work needed to be completed.

It's main rival was the VW Amarok, which is not as classy, but resides above the likes of the Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara on which the X-Class is based. However, unlike the Ford, the Mercedes and VW were both discontinued in 2020 with the Nissan doing the same in early 2022.

That said, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is still a fine used buy and offers the following highlights.

Economy, Towing, and Performance

Having been on sale between 2017 and 2020, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class offered some of the best economy in the pickup truck class, with 35mpg being achievable.

Performance came via punchy diesel engines which included a 2.3-litre 4-cylinder and a more silky and powerful 6-cylinder (V6).

Those who want the best will want the V6, thanks to an increase in power it will make light work of load lugging and of course towing bulky things.

Talking of the latter, the X-Class can tow up to an impressive 3,500kg making it one of the best in class when it comes to pickup trucks when it was on sale new.

Bodystyles, Payload, and Capacity

As for bodystyles, you'll find used examples of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class in the sole double cab pickup truck body with five seats.

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class does show its premium nature with a classier overall look, whereas the aforementioned Nissan Navara on which it's based, is a lot more rugged looking.

As for payload, again the X-Class was at the top of the sector when on sale, with up to 1,140kg on offer.

Capacity dimensions slightly differ to that of the Nissan Navara and feature a maximum load length of 1,587mm, a load width of 1,560mm and a sidewall height of 475mm.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Those who may think that the X-Class is just a re-badged Nissan Navara will see major differences when it comes to interiors of the two trucks.

It does hide its shared Nissan DNA well, with a smarter infotainment screen and typical Mercedes-Benz style air vents, steering wheel and general feel.

As standard, tech-wise you'll get air con, Bluetooth, DAB and 4MATIC four-wheel drive.

Go for top-spec Power models, and you'll also get LED lights, keyless go and a 360-degree camera in later models.
