Volkswagen Touran rear

The Volkswagen Touran is a spacious multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that has comfortable seating for up to seven people.

With the rise of SUVs, we're seeing less MPVs on the road. However, they still have their place for large families who need the enhanced practicality. If you're in the market for an MPV then you may have already considered a BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer or Ford S-MAX.

There are a variety of reasons you should consider a Touran as a used car purchase:

  • Volkswagen build quality
  • Seven seats
  • Affordable running costs
  • Large boot
  • Excellent safety features

Engines and Driving Experience

If you're looking for a smooth and effortless driving experience, then the Touran will serve you well, especially if you go for a model fitted with the DSG automatic gearbox. It's quite a large vehicle, so manoeuvring in tight spaces can be tricky, but the good visibility and standard-fit parking sensors make up for this.

Petrol

  • 1.5-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.9 seconds, up to 43.5mpg

Diesel

  • 1.6-litre: 113bhp, 0 to 62mph in 11.4 seconds, up to 51.4mpg
  • 2.0-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 9.3 seconds, up to 52.3mpg

Despite their modest power outputs, the Touran's range of engines make it feel relatively brisk when driving. What's more, none of the engines feel overly intrusive on the motorway, where some rivals can fall short.

Practicality and Running Costs

Volkswagen Touran rear seats

Sadly, the Touran doesn't get a sliding door like you do on the larger Sharan. It does make up for this with large opening rear doors though, making it super-easy to fit a child's seat via the ISOFIX anchor points.

There are seven seats on offer inside the Touran, with each row of seats offering decent head and legroom, although the third row is probably best suited to children.

With all three rows in place you'll have 137 litres of boot space, which isn't much to shout about. However, fold both rows completely flat and there's 1,857 litres of space, which is more like it.

The Touran occupies insurance groups between 13 and 17, which will pay dividends come renewal time. Consumables like tyres and brakes will also be very reasonable, and can be sorted by your local Evans Halshaw retailer alongside any servicing requirements.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Volkswagen Touran interior

It may not be the most flamboyant, but the Touran's interior impresses with its logical layout and quality finish. The infotainment system isn't the best compared to more modern alternatives but it responds quickly to inputs and makes it easy to navigate through the menus.

Equipment levels are good across the range, with entry-level 'SE' models benefitting from privacy glass, roof rails, air-conditioning and parking sensors for the front and rear. Head up the range and you'll get luxuries like a panoramic sunroof, satellite navigation, and a multimedia system that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Touran achieved five stars during its Euro NCAP crash test, scoring highly for child occupant protection, which is essential in this type of car. Standard safety features include:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Nine airbags
  • Post-collision braking

Is the Volkswagen Touran right for me?

Although there are SUVs that offer seating for seven people, the Kia Sorento being an example, they simply don't offer the same level of space inside compared to an MPV. The Touran is an appealing package that offers low running costs and has excellent safety features, making it a great choice if you want a family chariot.

If you need something bigger, then take a look at the Volkswagen Sharan. Alternatively, the Ford S-MAX will offer a more engaging driving experience, while the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is more premium.
