BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer Front

Proof that the MPV doesn't have to follow the usual blueprint. The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer takes the foundations of the attractive BMW 2 Series Coupe car to create an MPV that is rather upmarket and great to drive.

After only joining the MPV market in 2014, the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer has been a welcome addition to the BMW range. It has attracted a new customer base to the BMW brand who may have not chosen BMW before, or like the idea of a more luxurious MPV.

What makes the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer a good used buy?

  • Decent looks
  • Premium BMW feel
  • Very good to drive
  • BMW quality and refinement
  • Nice choice of engines
  • Introduces BMW to a new type of customer

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer Rear

MPVs are created and purchased due to their high practicality factors, and usually are not the best when it comes to driving dynamics, which is somewhat due to their tall boxy bodies. This is not the case with the 2 Series Gran Tourer. Instead, the Gran Tourer offers a surprisingly engaging driving experience, ensuring the BMW ethos has not been lost despite this being an MPV.

BMW's experience in creating great drivers' cars ensures that some of that iconic DNA has been embedded within the Gran Tourer. Those looking for extra practicality, whilst still keeping a car-like driving experience will be pleased that the Gran Tourer exists.

Engines are unsurprisingly refined, with a 1.5-litre and more potent 2.0-litre depending on model chosen. Engines are available in petrol and diesel forms, with economy of up to 55mpg possible.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer Seats

The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer offers 5-doors, along with 7-seats, which is two more than its sibling; the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (pictured alongside).

There is plenty of boot space (560 litres) in the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer when using five seats, but if you are using all seven, you still have a fairly useful 145 litres of space. With all the rear seats folded, you get a van-like loading space of 1820-litres.

Despite the premium nature of the BMW badge, running costs are reasonable and are only a little more than the average family MPV. Servicing can be carried out by any Evans Halshaw retailer, or Stratstone BMW retailer for more specialist care.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer Interior

Interior quality in the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is typical BMW of the era, and is arguably one of the best in the MPV class. You can tell you are behind the wheel of luxury and premium offering with leather, ergonomic switchgear and a smart infotainment screen all combining to make the interior ambience very inviting.

Features such as Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, satellite-navigation and BMW Online Services all come as standard too.

In terms of safety, the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer hasn't got a EURO NCAP safety rating, but being similar to its smaller sibling, the 2 Series Active Tourer, it should be pretty similar thanks to features such as a pedestrian warning with city braking function.

Is the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer right for me?

The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is aimed at customers who want a 7-seater MPV, that is still a delight to drive and carries a certain prestige being a BMW.

With the introduction of the 2 Series Gran Tourer, BMW have successfully introduced all-new customers to the brand who wanted a more premium MPV vehicle. Offering typical BMW style, refinement and a more rewarding driving experience - factors not often associated with MPVs, the Gran Tourer is certainly appealing.

If you don't need seven seats, the 5-seater BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is worth a look too. The Ford Galaxy is an MPV alternative if you are after an MPV which is more about the day-to-day rather than worrying to much about a premium image - it's also very good to drive.

A Mercedes-Benz V-Class is bigger still with eight seats as standard, but it does feel massive in comparison to the BMW.
