The Toyota Prius+ is a hybrid 7-seat MPV. Though not overly popular in the UK, it takes all of the benefits provided by the regular Prius and adds two extra seats. It was sold in the UK between 2012 and 2020, undergoing heavy revisions in 2015 that altered the exterior look.
It sits in the used Toyota range as one of a few 7-seat options the brand has, with the likes of the Verso and Proace Verso providing excellent practicality but without the hybrid powertrain. Reasons to buy a used Prius+ include:

Engines and Driving Experience
Only one powertrain is available on the Prius+, a 1.8-litre petrol/electric hybrid system generating a maximum of 134bhp. Performance can be described as leisurely, though in normal driving it accelerates adequately for most people.
The driving experience is relaxed and comfortable, with steering and handling that are tuned for smoothness rather than driving thrills. Around town is where the Prius+ does its best work, the electric motor and petrol engine kicking in and out as required to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.
All Prius+ are equipped with an automatic gearbox as standard, bringing the strain on the driver down even further.
Practicality and Running Costs
Here's where the Prius+ shines, and why it's a car that's loved by taxi drivers and large families alike. Space inside is predictably plentiful, especially in the front and second-row of seating. In that middle row, the seats slide, fold and recline independently of each other, and the totally flat floor means everyone can sit comfortably.
Folding and sliding the outer-most seats forward gives you decent access to the third-row, which is just about roomy enough to accommodate adults. Kids will be absolutely fine back there.
When the Prius+ was launched a combined fuel economy figure of 68.9mpg figure accompanied it, which was revised down to 47mpg by WLTP testing a few years later. The day-to-day reality is probably somewhere in between the two. Servicing is a similar price to any normal 7-seat MPV and can be taken care of by Evans Halshaw dealerships.
Interior, Technology and Safety
There's no getting away from the fact that the interior of the Prius+ is a bit weird compared to other, more conventional cars like the Ford S-MAX and Vauxhall Zafira. That being said, though the gauges and switchgear look futuristic, they operate in a fairly straightforward fashion that's easy to get used to.
Technology is excellent across all models, with a touchscreen infotainment system, colour TFT screen in the gauge cluster, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity and DAB digital radio standard on all examples from 2015 onwards.
Icon models are the entry-level cars, while Excel and Excel Plus come with a few extra goodies such as leather seats and rear DVD screens. Those top-spec models also come with improved standard safety equipment, featuring driver aids such as:

- Intelligent parking assist
Is the Toyota Prius+ right for me?
Large families as well as uber/taxi drivers will be the key beneficiaries of the Prius+'s talents. That's because the roomy nature of the interior as well as excellent fuel economy and low running costs are often key priorities for these used car buyers.
There's no shortage of options if you want a top-notch used 7-seater, however. The Ford S-MAX is faster and miles more fun to drive, while the Volkswagen Sharan and SEAT Alhambra are more refined. The equally quirky Citroën Grand C4 SpaceTourer is also a worthy contender, but of these alternatives none are widely available as a hybrid.
Van-based MPVs such as the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and Peugeot Traveller give you another avenue to explore.
