Used Mercedes-Benz V-Class For Sale

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a large multi-purpose vehicle, designed to transport up to eight people in luxury and comfort. This second generation version, on sale in the UK since 2014 and refreshed in 2019, has proven popular with both families and private hire firms who regularly take several people on long journeys.

It is one of the largest vehicles in the Mercedes-Benz used car range, and is much bigger than the brand's other MPV, the B-Class, which only has five seats. The V-Class has a breadth of positive attributes, most notably:

  • 6, 7 and 8-seater versions
  • Comfortable and spacious interior
  • Quiet and refined
  • Suitable for long journeys
  • Slick auto gearbox fitted as standard

Engines and Driving Experience

Used Mercedes-Benz V-Class Driving

There are three levels of V-Class engine performance to choose from: V 220, V 250 and V 300, all of which have a 'd' after their moniker to signify that they are diesel-powered. Earlier cars used a 2.1-litre unit, while facelifted versions switched to a lighter and more efficient 2.0-litre engine that improved fuel economy.

The V 220 d and V 250 d are 26bhp different in power (161bhp vs 187bhp), but in reality, unless you're really in a hurry, either of those engines will suit the relaxed nature of the V-Class' driving experience. You can expect between 35-40mpg from these variants in the real world.

With 236bhp, V 300 d models are the perfect choice if you're looking to tow regularly, with only a minimal impact on fuel economy despite the extra performance.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Mercedes-Benz V-Class Rear Seats

Practicality is the name of the game when it comes to the V-Class, however there are different seating configurations and body lengths to consider.

The standard configuration is 8 seats split across three rows. However, many are specified with the '7-Seat Package' which replaces the second-row bench seat with two individual seats and a foldable table that can be used for picnics or as a workspace.

A used V-Class could have either standard, long or extra-long wheelbases, so you'll need to bear that in mind when looking. The standard versions don't have a massive boot, so if you need to carry people and their luggage, it's best to look out for a long or even an extra-long V-Class. As you would expect from a car with electric sliding side-doors, access to the rear seats is very easy, which is generally why it's the preferred transport of sports stars and high-ranking business people.

While fuel economy is reasonable for a vehicle of this size, insurance may be expensive for younger drivers. Maintenance costs can be kept down by utilising any Evans Halshaw dealership for servicing, while Stratstone Mercedes-Benz can provide more specialist care.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Used Mercedes-Benz V-Class Interior, Dashboard

While the earlier versions did their best impersonation of a Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle with their interiors, the V-Class is clearly based on a van, despite some nice touches. Facelifted versions from 2019 are much nicer inside, particularly in the front, where a 10.25-inch touchscreen came standard and a digital instrument cluster could be specified, too.

'Sport' models are the most popular, and come equipped with heated leather seats, parking sensors, sat nav, lumbar support and alloy wheels. 'AMG Line' variants look a bit posher on the outside and add cruise control on the inside. There's also a campervan version, known as the V-Class Marco Polo, which includes everything from a kitchenette to a bed.

Rated five stars for safety by Euro NCAP, the V-Class features:

  • Driver, passenger and side airbags
  • Electronic stability programme
  • Sidewind assist system
  • Hill start assist
  • Electronic parking brake

Is the Mercedes-Benz V-Class right for me?

The V-Class has been designed to appeal as much to business users who seek a luxurious but discreet form of travel as it does to families who need to transport many children and their stuff. Its comfortable and spacious interior as well as refined and efficient driving style make it highly suitable for both of those scenarios.

Alternatives to the V-Class range from more traditional 7-seaters like the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Ford Galaxy to other van-derived MPVs such as the Citroën SpaceTourer and Vauxhall Vivaro Life.
