First seen in 2012, the third-generation Outlander has been around for a while now, receiving facelifts in 2015 and 2018.
Mitsubishi do like their models to hang around for a long time, and the Outlander is no exception, although it has got two major things going for it. Firstly, it's a popular SUV and secondly, it's a PHEV. This has ensured that despite being around for over a decade, it still has tech many people are searching for.

Engines and Driving Experience
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a typically sizable SUV with a substantial engine to match. It's a 2.4-litre petrol engine which produces a surprisingly low 133bhp. This is however cleverly backed-up by electric motor power - 81bhp from the front motor and 94bhp from the rear, totalling 308bhp.
It's a heavy beast, and so whilst acceleration is instant, you aren't going to be winning the traffic light grand prix, as 0 to 62mph takes 10.5 seconds. However, you don't buy the Outlander PHEV for pace, you buy it for its ultra-relaxing drive which is perhaps quieter around town than that of some of its rivals, including the Kia Niro.
The automatic gearbox really helps keep things smooth and easy, and with four-wheel drive, you'll have no issues with the UK's unpredictable weather.
Practicality and Running Costs
Slightly less practical than a regular Outlander due to the car's hybrid technology, the PHEV is by far the one to go for. And it doesn't encroach too much or steal masses of space.
You still get plenty of room in the cabin, with plenty of head and legroom for tall adults, even in the back of the car. There's a decent 463-litre boot too, but if you want 7-seats, a regular Outlander will be better for you.
As for running costs, the Outlander PHEV can return up to 139mpg, which is excellent, of which up to 28 miles can be done in pure electric mode. Insurance groups range between 23 and 29 (out of 50) and low-cost servicing can be done at any Evans Halshaw retailer.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Like many Mitsubishi models of this era, they're starting to show their age, especially against rivals. The interior uses analogue dials, along with some digital screens for the infotainment system.
They're not the flashiest interior instruments but they're good enough for most. Like most cars, the higher the trim you go for, the more toys you get, making the older interior feel a bit fresher. That said, even the entry-level models get heated front seats, DAB, cruise control, keyless go and climate control. Although you'll need to opt for the 'Design' trim or higher to get an 8-inch touchscreen - which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
As for safety, a five-star Euro NCAP score was achieved. Although, this was done back when it was launched in 2012 and so may not be as successful in today's scoring. However, kit still includes:
- Side, curtain and knee airbags
- Blind spot warning
- Rear cross traffic alert
- Lane departure warning
Is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV right for me?
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a good step into PHEV SUV ownership, but in an era where SUVs and PHEVs are not in short supply, the Outlander could be out of touch.
A Kia Niro PHEV of the same era has a nicer interior and can return nearly double the economy of the Outlander. But the Outlander can be purchased cheaper.
No matter, the Outlander is a very quiet and relaxing SUV, with quite a lot of space. As a first step into PHEV SUV ownership, it could be a decent purchase for the right person.
