You're pretty spoiled for choice if you want a family SUV that won't cost the earth to buy or run, with the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Ford Kuga proving popular throughout the past decade. However, there are very few vehicles that offer the same level of value as the MG HS, which represents a compelling package.

Engines and Driving Experience

For everyday driving, the MG HS is a good companion thanks to its soft suspension and comfortable seats. It doesn't quite offer the levels of refinement you'd get in more expensive alternatives, but it's not exactly far behind. Visibility is very good for the most part, making the HS easy to navigate in confined spaces.

Petrol

1.5-litre: 160bhp, 0 to 62mph in 9.9 seconds, up to 37.9mpg

Plug-in Hybrid

1.5-litre with 16.6kWh battery: 255bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds, up to 155.8mpg

While the hybrid variant will cost more to buy compared to the regular petrol, the better fuel efficiency and refinement is worth the outlay. In addition, the hybrid can travel up to 32 miles on battery power alone, making it ideal for cities or short commutes.

Practicality and Running Costs

The MG HS serves up a generous amount of head and legroom for passengers sitting in the front or rear of the vehicle. You can get three adults in the back, but the person sitting in the middle probably won't appreciate it during a long journey.

There is 463 litres of boot space available in the HS, which isn't class-leading but is larger than the likes of the Ford Kuga (412 litres). You have to sacrifice a bit of boot space if you go for the hybrid, but at 448 litres it's not a big deal.

Your annual premiums will reflect in the drivetrain you opt for, with the hybrid costing more to insure. Either way, no version of the HS exceeds group 28 (out of 50). Affordable servicing and maintenance is available through all Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Considering the HS is a budget-friendly SUV, it certainly has a modern and attractive interior design. A touchscreen infotainment system has been perched at the top of the dashboard, and offers a surprisingly vibrant appearance. It can lag a bit during use, but it's really not bad.

There are two model specifications you can choose from called 'Excite' and 'Exclusive'. The entry-level 'Excite' model comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rear-view camera, keyless entry and satellite navigation.

If you're feeling plush, then the top-spec 'Exclusive' model gets leather seats (the fronts are heated), a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights and dual-zone climate control.

The MG HS comes with a range of safety features and driver aids, such as:

Is the MG HS right for me?

The MG HS is a compelling package because of the excellent value it offers in a congested market. It isn't a class-leader by any stretch of the imagination, but it makes up for this with a generous amount of equipment and a practical cabin design.

Because the mid-sized family SUV market is so crowded, we'd recommend looking at some alternatives before committing. The Dacia Duster fits the same remit as the HS if you're on a strict budget, although upping your budget will get you behind the wheel of a Nissan Qashqai, which is a more polished all-round package.
