Used Mercedes-Benz E-Class For Sale

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class sits in the middle of the brand's line-up of cars. It's larger than the C-Class, but smaller than the S-Class. This generation, sold in the UK since 2017, is available in Saloon, Estate, Coupé and Cabriolet bodystyles.

Comfort and refinement are the two main priorities of the E-Class, with Mercedes combining exceptional attention to detail with all of the latest technology and design in order to create a car which can cover long distances without breaking a sweat.

There are a good number of reasons for considering a Mercedes E-Class as your next car:

  • Comfortable ride and excellent refinement
  • Stylish and classy exterior design
  • Beautiful interior made with top-quality materials
  • High levels of advanced technology
  • Five-star safety rating

By a considerable margin, the E 220 d is the most popular engine choice when it comes to the E-Class, and with very good reason. It's a 2.0-litre diesel unit that produces 191bhp, enough to power you from 0 to 62 mph in a swift 7.1 seconds. Despite this more than adequate turn of pace, economy is good too, with around 45mpg to be expected.

Cars badged E 300 d and E 350 d are more powerful versions of essentially the same engine, while the E 400 d sported a lovely 3.0-litre motor. Petrol units typically came in E 200 and E 300 form, offering a similar level of performance but significantly lower fuel economy of around 35mpg.

Both petrol and diesel plug-in hybrid versions can be found on the used market, while performance-oriented Mercedes-AMG versions of the E-Class are available too.

All examples of this generation E-Class came standard with a 9-speed automatic gearbox which, like the rest of the car, is competent, refined and silky smooth.

Practicality and Running Costs

The E-Class can be as practical or as impractical as you want it to be. Saloon and estate versions are great for those with families, but even the Convertible and Coupé models are able to carry two adults and two kids in relative comfort.

In terms of boot space, the Estate is obviously the winner, with a class-leading 640-litre capacity, more than the Volvo V90 (560 litres) and BMW 5 Series Touring (570 litres). It extends to 1,820 litres with the rear seats folded down, but you should note that plug-in hybrid models have a lower boot capacity owing to the batteries that take up some space (you can see the 'hump' in the image). Saloon models have a 540-litre boot, which is still pretty sizeable.

Running costs are what you would expect from a luxury car, and while servicing will cost you more than cars such as the Ford Mondeo, road tax will be the same thanks to the flat-rate road tax system. To save money, you can have your Mercedes serviced at any Evans Halshaw dealership. If you'd prefer a Mercedes specialist, take a look at Stratstone Mercedes-Benz.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Interior quality and technology are where Mercedes models shine, and the E-Class is no different. Step inside and you are greeted with the kinds of soft-touch materials that instantly let you know you're in something at the luxury end of the car spectrum.

Technology is strong too, with popular AMG Line models featuring no fewer than five different drive modes, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, sat nav and a reversing camera. For the extra bit of dazzle, look out for models that were optioned with the dual 12.3-inch infotainment and digital instrument cluster. It's a real showstopper, and became standard on the E-Class from the 2020 facelift.

The E-Class has been five-star safety rated since its launch in 2016, with advanced driver assistance technology helping it to top marks. Safety equipment includes:

  • Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Electronic parking brake
  • Attention assist
  • Electronic stability programme
  • Two ISOFIX child seat anchor points

Is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class right for me?

The Mercedes E-Class is a jack of all trades, and manages to master quite a few of them. It's the perfect business companion, helping you to munch away the miles in high levels of comfort. It has all the technology you need and provides more than enough room for the whole family, particularly in Saloon and Estate form.

It isn't the last word in driver engagement however, so if you want something that feels sportier, check out the BMW 5 Series Touring. Other segment rivals include the Audi A6 Avant and Volvo V90, both of which offer excellent interior quality and the desirable upmarket feel.
