The Mazda CX-5 is a medium-sized family SUV that offers an engaging driving experience and a smart interior design.

If you're in the market for a family SUV then you may have already considered the likes of the SEAT Ateca or Nissan Qashqai, both of which are excellent vehicles.

The CX-5 is less common than those cars but makes a great alternative as a used car purchase because of the following reasons:

  • Handsome appearance
  • Stylish and well-thought-out interior
  • Big boot
  • Efficient engine choices
  • Affordable running costs

Engines and Driving Experience

The law of physics dictate that SUVs don't tend to handle well because of their size and height. However, the CX-5 feels nimble and planted, which should suit you if driving engagement is a priority.

Thankfully, the fun drive doesn't compromise on comfort. The CX-5 feels compliant over rough road surfaces and has a quiet cabin; making for an enjoyable long distance companion.

Petrol

  • 2.0-litre: produces 163bhp, 0 to 62mph between 9.9 and 10.5 seconds, up to 42.2mpg
  • 2.5-litre: produces 191bhp, 0 to 62mph in 9.3 seconds, up to 35.0mpg

Diesel

  • 2.2-litre: produces 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 9.2 seconds, up to 50.4mpg
  • 2.2-litre: produces 182bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.8 seconds, up to 44.8mpg

Depending on the engine you go for, you'll either benefit from a slick 6-speed manual gearbox or an automatic. The most powerful diesel engine comes with all-wheel drive, so is worth looking at if you live in a rural area.

Practicality and Running Costs

Mazda CX-5 boot

If you want something bigger than a regular hatchback, then the CX-5 is a worthwhile upgrade because of the excellent amount of head and legroom. In addition, the rear doors open nice and wide, making it easier to fit a child's seat using the ISOFIX anchor points.

With 506 litres of boot space, the CX-5 is well-equipped to deal with family life. The boot will happily accommodate a bicycle or two once the rear seats have been folded down, revealing 1,620 litres of capacity. Towing won't be an issue since the CX-5 can haul a braked trailer weighing between 1,800kg and 2,100kg (depending on spec).

The CX-5 sits in insurance groups between 16 and 26 (out of 50), which should prove beneficial come renewal time. Affordable servicing and maintenance is available through all Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Courtesy of an ergonomic design and a host of quality materials, the CX-5's cabin is up there with the best at its price point. The wide central screen sits at eye level for safety, and grants access to an intuitive infotainment system that can be easily controlled via a rotary dial next to the handbrake.

Equipment levels are generous across the range, with entry-level 'SE-L' models coming with DAB radio, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control and LED headlights. 'Sport' models benefit from a leather interior with heated front seats, a Bose sound system and 19-inch alloy wheels.

If you want luxury then go for the 'GT Sport', which gets Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof.

The CX-5 scored five stars during its Euro NCAP safety test thanks to features such as:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane keep assist
  • Lane departure warning

Is the Mazda CX-5 right for me?

There are plenty of family SUVs available for you to choose from, but the CX-5 makes a great choice because of its handsome appearance, low running costs and spacious cabin. Take into account the generous equipment list and the CX-5 represents good value compared to more expensive alternatives.

If you're in the market for this type of SUV, then check out the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan and Nissan Qashqai before committing since they're both excellent. If you want something more premium, then we'd recommend looking at the Audi Q3.
