The third-generation Renault Megane was available between 2008 and 2016. Most commonly available as a hatchback, this particular version was also available in a 3-door Coupé, Sport Tourer, Coupé Cabriolet and a high-performance Renaultsport version.

For the purpose of this piece we will focus on the most common hatchback/coupé models, complementing with information about the other versions where necessary. However, on the face of it, this Megane generation as a whole offered:

  • Smart styling - especially the 3-door Coupé
  • Decent comfort
  • Better refinement than previous models
  • Multiple bodystyles and models

Engines and Driving Experience

Megane Exterior

Spanning a number of years, a number of petrol and diesel engines are available in the Megane. A 1.6-litre petrol available in the range is quite leisurely, taking over 10 seconds to complete the 0 to 62mph dash, along with an updated 1.2 that is a touch slower, but more economical with over 50mpg possible.

Diesel engines are slower still, taking circa 12 seconds to hit 62mph from standstill. They can return 80mpg according to Renault though, but you'll probably see more in the region of high 60mpg or 70mpg ranges.

Overall, the Megane drives with a decent amount of comfort and poise, but the standout is the sharper 3-door Coupé - especially if you opt for a Renaultsport model. That has the range-topping 2.0-litre petrol, pumping out a tasty 275bhp, good for 0 to 62mph in just 5.8 seconds, whilst offering renowned handling and driver focus.

Practicality and Running Costs

Megane Boot

Of course, the 5-door Megane is more practical than the sleeker 3-door Coupé. The former also offering 372 litres of boot space, as opposed to the Coupé offering a little less with 344 litres. Sport Tourer models (estates) offer the most practicality though, with 486 litres of boot space, increasing to 1,567 with the seats folded.

This boot capacity is about right for similar cars, although you can find a little more or a little less, but overall the Megane isn't bad at all. Running costs are not expensive either, with decent economy possible from all variants; even the RS can return around 37mpg.

Servicing is reasonable, and can be carried out at any Evans Halshaw Renault dealer. Again, Renaultsport models will command more to run due to special performance parts, and tyres costing more due to their low profile.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Megane Interior

Of course the interior of the Megane is now starting to look dated against newer models featuring the latest digital dials and plush infotainment screens. Although the design is over a decade old, the interior still carries some nice design touches, like smart instrument clusters finished with chrome surrounds.

The interior is neat and tidy on the whole and is not offensive or poor; it does the job well. Again, Renaultsport models get nicer materials and more attractive sports-focused detailing. In terms of tech, even entry-level models get air-conditioning, Bluetooth and cruise control. As for safety, six airbags and electronic stability control come as standard.

The Megane was awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, although this was downgraded to three-stars when more stringent standards were introduced in 2014.

Is the Renault Megane right for me?

It's not been an easy time for the Renault Megane, due to just how popular the hatchback market has been. This model has had it rough from high performers such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus.

That said, the Megane looks like good value when compared to the other two and the Megane Renaultsport is a seriously impressive hot hatch that will have keen drivers beaming from ear to ear.

The 3-door Coupé is certainly the most handsome, but the 5-door regular hatch is good if you are looking for good economy and simplistic style that won't cost the earth to buy or run.
