Introducing the Renault Megane

Introduced back in the 1990s, the Renault Megane has consistently done well for the French giants because of how well-rounded and affordable it is as a package.

For quite some time now, the Megane has represented an excellent alternative to the traditional Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf, what with the quality design and enjoyable driving experience putting it up there among the class leaders.

Subtle yet sophisticated tweaks have been made to the latest Megane, providing a more premium aesthetic. The result has been fruitful, with the Megane becoming an even better buying prospect for customers who value the latest technologies for an affordable outlay.

The Megane is now also being offered with Renault's latest E-Tech technology and is currently available as the Megane Sport Tourer Plug-in Hybrid, with the hatchback version being introduced in 2021.

Design and Practicality

Renault Megane Sports Tourer

Renault have done an excellent job with the design of the Megane, which distinguishes itself from the competition with its unique exterior image and signature LED Pure Vision lighting. Complementing the handsome appearance are a wide choice of alloy wheel designs.

Ideal for a young family, the Megane is available as a compact hatchback or a Sport Tourer, both have plenty of room in the front and rear. The kids are guaranteed to love the sheer amount of space in the back; even taller passengers will appreciate just how much headroom there is. Getting a child in the back is easy work thanks to the wide opening created by the rear doors. There's isofix anchor points too.

Boot space is generous to say the least, with a substantial 1,247 litres to play with in the hatchback and an enormous 1,504 litres in the Sports Tourer when the EASY-FOLD function rear seats are down.

Technology and Safety

Renault Megane Interior

There are two models to choose from in the Megane range, all of which are generously equipped as standard. Even the entry-level version comes with a 7-inch multimedia touchscreen, as well as Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™.

Other desirable features that come as standard in the Visio System are lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and automatic high/low beam. If you're a big fan of music, then you can opt for an amplified 9-speaker sound system by BOSE, which also brings a BOSE audio unit with it.

Safety equipment is very good across the range, there are driver, passenger and lateral air bags as standard, while features such as Hill Start Assist and the tyre pressure monitor are essential in today's world.

Economy and Performance

Renault Megane Range

Renault offer two engines for the Megane, which consist of a petrol and diesel option. There is also the not-so-small matter of the Megane R.S hatchback, which boasts an exclusive 280 bhp turbocharged 1.8-litre engine and deploys its power through a clever limited-slip differential.

The 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 138 bhp and is punchy enough to make progress swift in the Megane. Regular driving will return just under 45 mpg on a combined cycle. If you spend a lot of time on the motorway, then the frugal 1.5-litre diesel is the one for you. Expecting around 60 mpg on a combined cycle isn't unreasonable with this unit.

Regardless of your preference, you get a 6-speed manual as standard along with the option to spec an automatic transmission if you want it.

CO2 emissions and fuel consumption can be significantly reduced if you choose the Megane Sport Tourer E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid which combines two electric motors with a 1.6-litre petrol engine to provide an electric driving range of up to 40 miles in an urban setting.
