The hotly-anticipated new Vauxhall Corsa-e is set to be one of the biggest new cars of 2019, being the first all-electric model in the Vauxhall range.

As we all know, the Corsa is already one of the most popular cars in the UK, with over 2.1 million models sold in this country since it launched in 1993. Its compact dimensions, comfortable interior and easy driving make it a popular choice for a wide range of buyers. The addition of an electric version will only add to its popularity. Let's take a look at its key features.

Propel your way to success

The new Corsa-e will not only offer great environmental credentials, but impressive performance too. The electronic propulsion system, powered by a 50kWh, will offer 136bhp and 260Nm of torque, meaning a sprint to 62mph in just 8.1 seconds. Keen drivers can take advantage of the Sport driving mode for even quicker response and increased performance.

Long battery range, short charging time

The Corsa-e will have you covered for both long and short journeys alike. In Normal driving mode, the battery gives you an impressive driving range of 211 miles. This is cut by 10% in Sport mode, but the Eco mode delivers a range up to 40% greater than Sport mode.

The battery range is enhanced even further by the intelligent regenerative braking system, designed to convert the excess kinetic energy produced by braking into electric energy, to be reused immediately or stored in the battery. Two levels of regenerative braking are available for the driver to choose, with the lower level being similar to the engine braking of a fuel-powered car, and the higher level offering increased drag torque for maximum energy recuperation.

For convenience, the Corsa-e is equipped with an on-board 11kW charger. It can also be charged via a cable connecting to a wallbox or a rapid charger. With the latter, the Corsa-e can be charged to 80% capacity in just half an hour.

Premium technology

This electrified version will refresh the Corsa in terms of its interior specification too, boasting advanced technologies and driver assistance systems that wouldn't be out of place in premium cars. A 7-inch colour touchscreen comes as standard - with a 10-inch colour touchscreen to be available with the top-of-the-range Multimedia Navi Pro system - along with wireless phone charging for suitable smartphones. It will be easy to access your Corsa-e too, thanks to the 'Open and Start' keyless locking and start system, which recognises the driver via smart device and is equipped with anti-theft protection.

The multimedia systems are controllable by voice recognition and are angled towards the driver for maximum convenience. They also offer the new Vauxhall Connect telematics service, which includes Live Navigation with real-time traffic information, key vehicle data checking via an app, and an emergency call button, giving you complete peace of mind.

Camera and optional radar technology provides a range of sophisticated safety features. This includes a couple of firsts, such as Lane Keep Assist (the first time the Corsa has been equipped with this capability) and Adaptive Cruise Control (a first for compact cars). There are also two automatic emergency braking systems, Drowsiness Detection, and an Automatic Parking Assistant - you can park without having to steer!

Just The Start

Along with the Grandland X plug-in hybrid (set to go on sale in late 2019) the Corsa-e will lead Vauxhall's electric charge this year, as part of the brand's PACE! strategy to reduce CO2. Two more electric models are set to follow in 2020: a successor to the Mokka X SUV and a new Vivaro van.

Vauxhall's shared multi-energy platforms make it possible to offer various propulsion systems on a common platform, which is key to their production of electric models. As a result, Vauxhall aims to have an electrified version of every model in its range by 2024. Exciting times for the British brand!
