In a world where SUVs are the go-to choice for families or professionals who want something practical, it was refreshing to see MG break the mould with the MG5 EV. As a dedicated all-electric estate, it sits in a class of its own but costs less than the likes of the Renault Zoe and Nissan LEAF, which offer less space.

Engines and Driving Experience

Courtesy of a spacious cabin, the MG5 EV offers comfortable seating for adults sitting in the front or back. You do get slightly more space in the likes of the Skoda Octavia estate, but you'll have to pay more for the privilege.
You shouldn't have any issue fitting a child's seat since the rear doors open nice and wide, providing convenient access to the ISOFIX anchor points. There's 464 litres of boot space to utilise, which grows to an impressive 1,456 litres once the rear seats have been folded down.
A minor downside of being electric is that the MG5 EV occupies insurance group 32 (out of 50). However, the savings compared to running a car with a traditional internal combustion engine more than make up for this. Low cost servicing is available through all Evans Halshaw retailers.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
Given how much the MG5 EV costs, the interior is much better than it has any right to be. It's not the most futuristic or flamboyant, but the simplistic layout and generous equipment list compensate for this minor shortfall.
Kicking off the range is the 'Long Range Excite' model, which gets a central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, a rear parking camera and an adjustable dual-height boot floor.
If you want added luxuries, then the 'Long Range Exclusive' gets roof rails, keyless entry with push button start, automatic air-conditioning, and four USB ports.
Each model comes with MG Pilot Advanced Driver Assistance System, which means you benefit from the following safety features and driver aids:

The MG5 EV is in a bit of niche market because it's the only dedicated all-electric estate available that's affordable to buy and run. If that appeals to you, and you want good range and a host of desirable gadgets, then this car is right for you.
Like we said, there aren't any direct competitors for this vehicle. However, there are some that occupy a similar price point that you may want to consider. The Renault Zoe provides a better driving experience, while the Nissan LEAF is a better all-round package that's also very practical.
