With its smoother, rounder shape, the first thing you'll notice is that, despite sharing a name, it's very different from the standard MG4 EV. In fact, the front-wheel-drive MG4 EV Urban is built on an entirely new dedicated EV platform. The battery is built into the car's body rather than mounted in a separate frame — a feature typically found in premium alternatives at much higher price points, not in a hatchback in this segment.
The practical upside is a flatter, lower floor and more cabin space, which explains how this family hatchback offers the room you'd expect from an SUV at the price of a much smaller car.
Design and Practicality
With its clean, forward-looking exterior, the MG4 EV Urban is a more considered-looking car than its price tag might lead you to expect.
But where this model really shines is inside. The cabin is a gimmick-free zone - physical climate controls sit exactly where you'd expect them, so choosing the right setting is straightforward and intuitive rather than fiddling around with loads of touchscreen menus.
Genuinely generous legroom for both front and rear occupants is complemented by 30 individual storage compartments. There's still room for 479 litres of boot space, plus a further 98 litres in an easily accessible area below the boot floor - a perfect home for your charging cables.
Put the rear seats down for a grand total of 1,364 litres of space, so when you make a trip to the plumbing merchants, you'll have ample room for everything, including the kitchen sink.
Technology and Safety
Here's another area where the MG4 EV Urban punches above its weight. That's down to features like a 360-degree HD camera, which makes squeezing into tight parking spaces less of a performance.
Higher-specced options come equipped with a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen and a 7-inch digital driver display as standard, delivering a modern interface for navigation, media and car settings. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, so your phone connects the moment you get in, while wireless device charging also adds to the convenience.
Safety-wise, the MG4 EV Urban carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating and comes with MG Pilot as standard - a suite of driver-assistance systems that includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot detection. MG Pilot's Custom Function lets you set your preferred settings and recalls them each time you drive, so the car adapts to you rather than the other way around.
Engines and Performance
The MG4 EV Urban is available with two LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery options. The Standard Range model uses a 43kWh battery producing around 147bhp, while the Long Range variant steps up to a 54kWh battery and approximately 158bhp, providing up to 258 miles of WLTP range. That's enough to power you around two complete laps of the M25, traffic jams permitting.
Both versions are front-wheel drive - a layout that keeps your drive predictable and easy to manage. Five drive modes - Snow, Eco, Standard, Sport and a customisable setting - let you change how the car responds to suit your mood or the conditions.
Regenerative braking is also built in, recovering energy as you slow down. This is particularly useful in town where the feature quietly improves efficiency without requiring any extra effort from you. Better still, a heat pump comes as standard, so winter doesn't reduce your range when temperatures drop suddenly.
Charging
For everyday use, home charging with a 7kW wallbox ensures a full battery overnight, always ready for the morning commute - even if you're not. The Premium Long Range specification also includes battery preconditioning, which sets up the battery for faster charging in cold weather.
Keeping you in the know, the MG iSMART app lets you monitor charge status and plan journeys remotely before you even get near your car.
Using a public rapid charger, the Long Range model can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes, enabling you to add meaningful range when you're grabbing a sandwich and a coffee during a break at the motorway services.
