Introducing the Kia Rio

Believe it or not, the Kia Rio has been around since the turn of the century. During that time, it has developed into a dependable and popular supermini that offers an alternative to the traditional supermini crowd.

The Rio has undergone a major transformation over the past decade, with a series of design refreshes and technological upgrades having been implemented with every update.

Now entering its latest generation, the Kia Rio has improved in all the right areas. New engine choices have been introduced for greater efficiency, while the latest driver aids and safety features have been included. The result is a supermini that has the mannerisms of a larger car, but without the associated running costs.

Design and Practicality

Kia Rio Boot Space

Think of the latest generation Rio as an evolution of the design language implemented on its predecessor. The assertive headlights sit either side of the distinctive 'tiger-nose grille', while the general body shape flows effortlessly from the front to the rear of the car.

The interior layout is ergonomic and therefore everything is easy to find; it simply makes sense and feels instantly familiar. Thanks to the raised roofline, there's a generous amount of head room inside for adults sitting in the back. There's also plenty of adjustment for the driver to enjoy.

With the rear seats up, there is 352 litres of boot space available. This does extend to 1,103 litres once they have been folded down though.

Technology and Safety

Kia Rio Interior

Generously equipped across the range, it's hard to imagine anyone feeling shortchanged with the Rio they have bought.

For example, the entry-level model gets features like air-conditioning, Bluetooth with music streaming, and automatic light control as standard. Work your way up the range and you get access to other desirable technologies, such as Kia's intuitive 7-inch infotainment system that comes with Apple Car Play and Android Auto.

There's a number of safety features throughout the Rio, which include twin front, side and curtain airbags on all models. You also get access to clever technologies, which include:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Vehicle Stability Management
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)
  • Lane Departure Warning system

Economy and Performance

Kia Rio Driving

Kia Rio is available with four different engines, which consists of three petrol units and a sole diesel that is available with two different outputs.

The 1.25-litre and 1.4-litre petrol engines are spot on if you spend a lot of time in the urban environment, and will return between 46 and 56.5 mpg during normal driving conditions. The 1.4 petrol is available with a 4-speed automatic.

Available with either 99 or 118 bhp, the turbocharged 1.0-litre is a fine all-rounder that is ideal if you find yourself on a motorway sporadically. This engine offers a good wedge of torque and has the ability to return up to 48 mpg on a combined cycle.

The single 1.4-litre diesel engine comes in two guises (76 and 89 bhp). They aren't as fast as their petrol equivalents, but with 80.7 mpg on offer, they'll certainly save you money at the pumps.
