City cars sometimes get overlooked as being underpowered and cheap, but those in the know understand that these cars can be little gems, ideal for nipping to the shops or being a great companion in crowded cities.

  • Cheap running costs
  • Economical engine choice

Engines and Driving Experience

i10 Second Gen Side

Small city cars normally offer small capacity petrol engines, and the second-generation Hyundai i10 is no different, offering 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre engine choices.

The 1.0-litre features 66bhp, propelling the car from 0 to 62mph in a rather leisurely 14 seconds, but it does feel quicker, due to its compact size and nippy character. The low power means you'll see 50mpg though.

The 1.2-litre has over 20bhp more, with 87bhp on tap for a quicker 0 to 62mph time of just under 12 seconds, with around 40-45mpg possible from this engine.

We'd recommend the manual gearbox, as the auto available in the 1.2-litre dents the mpg and performance, and besides, the manual suits the nippy character of the i10 well, and offers a smooth gear change and ensures the i10 offers an engaging and fun driving experience.

Practicality and Running Costs

i10 Second Gen Front

Despite its compact proportions, the i10 has always come as standard with 5-doors. Two adults can sit on the rear seats with decent comfort considering this is a city car and they'll also be treated to some good head and leg room too.

Boot space is 252 litres, making it one of the best in the city car class, but its rivals offer that little bit more, or that little bit less, so you won't be choosing a city car on boot space, that's for sure.

As for running costs, with 40mpg the lowest you're likely to see, the i10 is nice and cheap to run. Tyres and general maintenance are wallet and purse friendly too. It's also going to be relatively cheap to service, which can be taken care of at any Evans Halshaw Hyundai dealership.

Interior, Technology and Safety

i10 Second Gen Interior

First appearing in 2014, older cars feature a more simplistic interior, as expected. We'd recommend a late 2016 facelift car, which benefits from a smart 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system on Premium SE trims, which also includes the rather useful Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with sat-nav.

All cars feature smart, clear and crisp analogue dials and some trims offering a splash of colour to liven up the simplistic yet charming interior.

Being tested under more stringent Euro NCAP rules, the i10 still managed a decent 4 out of 5 stars score, offering safety equipment in the form of:

  • Six airbags
  • Tyre-pressure monitoring
  • Electronic stability control

Is the Hyundai i10 right for me?

The second-generation of the Hyundai i10 is a more than decent offering in the city-car segment.

The VW Up! is strong competition, being a brand known for refinement and quality, but the i10 is by no means in its shadow and offers a great all-round package, which offers good space and a fun driving experience.

The cheap running costs further give the i10 appeal. It would make a good first car, or perhaps a cheap second car for nailing the daily driver duty with ease.
