Introducing the new Hyundai IONIQ 3

Hyundai IONIQ 3 with open boot, showcasing practicality and luggage space

Until now, the IONIQ badge has always meant a mid-size or large electric car. The IONIQ 3 is the first to bring that name to a compact hatchback. It's still spacious enough to work as a family-friendly EV, without stepping up to a bigger, pricier model.

Hyundai calls it an 'Aero Hatch', built around efficiency, though you wouldn't guess it from the amount of room inside for people and their things. It's a sensible choice for commuters, young families and anyone making the switch to electric, with everyday usability built in from the start.

Whether you're running the children to school, doing the big grocery shop or enjoying a weekend escape up the motorway, the IONIQ 3 is built to make electric driving feel like second nature.

Design and Practicality

The IONIQ 3's 'Aero Hatch' styling isn't just for show. That sleek, low-slung profile and neat rear spoiler help the car slip through the air more efficiently, which in turn helps stretch every charge that bit further. Look twice at the lighting design and you'll spot four small dots — a subtle nod to the letter 'H' in Morse code, and a sign of the detail built into this car.

Inside, Hyundai has taken what it calls a 'Furnished Space' approach, arranging the cabin more like a living room than a traditional car interior. A flat floor and long wheelbase free up generous leg and headroom for everyone on board.

Boot space totals 441 litres, made up of a 322-litre main boot and a clever 119-litre 'Megabox' tucked underneath the load floor. It's a handy spot for charging cables, muddy boots or anything else you'd rather keep out of sight.

Technology and Safety

At the centre of the IONIQ 3's dashboard sits the new Pleos Connect infotainment system, the first of its kind to appear in a European Hyundai. Built on Android Automotive OS, it offers sharp graphics, AI-enhanced voice recognition and an open app marketplace, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto if you'd rather mirror your own phone.

A digital key lets you lock, unlock and even share access to the car using just a smartphone or smartwatch, while built-in route planning takes the stress out of longer journeys by factoring in charging stops along the way.

Talking safety, Hyundai's SmartSense suite comes well equipped, including motorway driving assistance, a surround view camera, blind-spot monitoring and remote parking, so that squeezing into a narrow space no longer means holding your breath.

Powertrains and Performance

Built on Hyundai's E-GMP electric platform, the IONIQ 3 comes with a choice of two battery sizes, depending on how far you usually drive. The Standard Range model uses a 42.2kWh battery for up to 213 miles, while the Long Range version steps up to a larger 61kWh battery for up to 308 miles on a single charge.

Power comes from a front-mounted electric motor producing around 145bhp in Standard Range form, with a slightly more efficient 132bhp motor in the Long Range model. Both deliver the smooth, instant response electric driving is known for, particularly useful when pulling away from junctions or joining the motorway.

If you want the IONIQ 3 to turn a few more heads, a sportier-styled option is also available, and it's no less practical for everyday motoring.

Charging

At home, an AC wallbox lets you top up the battery overnight, so you wake up each morning with a full charge ready to go, and that's by far the cheapest way to keep it topped up.

Out and about, the IONIQ 3 supports AC charging at speeds of up to 22kW at public and workplace charge points. Its rapid DC charging capability allows a 10 to 80 percent boost in around 29 to 30 minutes, ideal for a quick stop on a longer journey.

The built-in route planner within Pleos Connect makes finding a suitable charger easy, while Plug & Charge technology can handle automatic payment at compatible points, taking one more thing off your mind. What's more, thanks to Vehicle-to-Load technology, the battery can power everyday devices or camping kit through a normal three-pin socket, useful for festivals or trips to the middle of nowhere.
