Engines and Driving Experience
There is only a single powertrain option for the Starray EM-i. It arrives with a chirpy 1.5-litre engine pushing out 98bhp paired with an electric motor delivering a reasonable 215bhp. The combined output is a cool 259bhp. 0 to 62 mph at 8 seconds isn't going to break any speed records, but it gets you moving quickly enough for urban and motorway use.
There are two battery choices, depending on which trim you choose, providing either a 51-mile range or, with the larger unit, up to 84 miles on full-electric power. The latter is pretty impressive for a hybrid of this size. The combined range is impressive, with 585 and 618 miles per battery, and a respectable fuel economy of up to 201.8mpg WLTP.
In terms of the overall driving experience, the Strarray EM-i is built for purpose, and that purpose is comfort and convenience. It feels smooth on both motorways and urban streets, and is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre, despite its larger dimensions.
Practicality and Running Costs
The Starray EM-i has an interior similar to the Geely EX5. Roomy with five seats, lots of headroom, and comfortable, especially in the back, where you can fit your family or three averagely-sized adults.
The Starray's driving position is impressive and upright, giving you plenty of room to get comfortable behind the wheel. All versions come with electrically adjustable seats, making it easy to get into your favourite driving position.
The boot floor is height adjustable, and at its lowest position, you get a decent 528 litres of boot space, ideal for a large family. There is additional storage underneath, which is ideal for bits and bobs such as charging cables. Drop the rear seats, and it opens up to a staggering 2,065 litres.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
With various trims available at the moment, you get a lot of standard equipment between the three, including a 15.4-inch central infotainment touchscreen, 19-inch wheels, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, climate control and keyless entry. The middle- and top-level trims have a few extras, such as a panoramic roof, a heated steering wheel, and a ventilated driver’s seat.
The centre console also has a built-in wireless charging pad on mid- and top-level trims, and all trims have front and rear cupholders and other storage solutions.
When it comes to safety, the Geely Starray EM-i has an exceptional five-star NCAP safety rating, so for those with families where safety is crucial, take note.
