The Ford Transit Custom has been a success from the start, consistently taking the crown of the UK's best-selling van.
It's a popular choice for your average van owner, whilst also being a textbook choice for fleet buyers.
Again, it comes as no surprise, as Ford have a nature of providing great all-rounder vehicles and the Transit Custom is no exception. However, the Renault Trafic and Vauxhall Vivaro are also decent van alternatives.
That said, the Transit Custom stays dominant due to many factors, which include:

Economy, Towing, and Performance
Early Transit Custom models from 2012 to 2016 used a 2.2-litre TDCi turbodiesel engine, with either 98bhp, 124bhp or 153bhp.
Later models reduced in size to 2.0 litres, but were much more efficient EcoBlue turbodiesel units. Despite the lower displacement, they offered more power with 103bhp, 128bhp and 168bhp – along with having circa 20 percent more torque – ideal for carrying and towing stuff.
Talking of towing, all Ford Transit Customs will tow 750kg unbraked, whilst braked values rise up to 2,800kg.
As for performance, the Transit Custom drives similar to a car. Although vans aren't really known for their acceleration, 0 to 62mph occurs in around 10 seconds, which isn't too shabby considering a van isn't the most aerodynamic shape in the world.
Bodystyles, Payload, and Capacity
As for bodystyles, the Ford Transit Custom is available as a regular panel van, along with a Double Cab and a Kombi. You can also get short wheelbase low and high roof, along with long wheelbase low and high roof.
The regular panel van has three seats, Double Cab can seat six and the Kombi can seat up to nine - basically a minibus.
Ford Transit Custom payload ranges from just shy of 700kg to 1,500kg depending on spec and trim chosen.
Capacity wise, the Transit Custom is excellent and has a maximum load length of up to 2,921mm, load height of up to 1,778mm and load width of 1,775. These are all the highest values, whilst the short wheelbase low roof has lower rates with a load length of 2,554mm, load height of 1,406mm and load width of 1,775mm.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
Interiors of the Transit Custom are excellent, with durable materials and an ergonomic crisp and clear design.
Standard equipment consists of remote locking, 4.2-inch infotainment screen with DAB, Bluetooth, and two 12v power sockets.
As is the norm, higher spec Transit Custom models feature tech and kit which include an 8-inch infotainment screen, body coloured bumpers, auto lights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors, air con, alloy wheels and leather interiors on certain models.
Being a Ford, safety is also decent, with a five-star NCAP crash-test rating upon launch and later a silver award in 2020. Safety kit in the range includes:
- Auto emergency braking
- Up to six airbags
- Blind Spot Information System
- Cross Traffic Alert
