Hybrid vehicles are a great way to experience the benefits of some electrical input, but still keep hold of the trusty internal combustion engine.

Some may not want to go for a fully-electric option, and so the hybrid vehicles out there provide many benefits to essentially blend the advantages of both internal combustion and electric.

And, when you rely on your vehicle for your business, like with a van, it could be the ideal solution for keeping running costs low, but having the convenience of an internal combustion engine you can fill up with fuel super easily.

In this list, we present our top picks for those looking for a van, with a hybrid nature:

Ford Transit Custom PHEV

Ford Transit Custom PHEV

For generations, the Ford Transit has been the textbook choice for those looking for the perfect van. It's strong, tough, reliable and robust, ideal for ensuring any business runs smoothly.

The latest version pictured above features a sharper design language, along with the possibility of up to 35 miles electric range. There's also a 1,350kg payload, and a 2,300kg towing capability.

There's also a decent previous generation version in the form of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost unit, which may sound small, but these engines pack more punch than their name suggests.

You'll be able to do circa 30 miles on electric, meaning circa 50mpg is possible on the whole. There's a payload of 1,130kg, slightly lower than the updated version, but the 2,300kg towing capacity is matched, and being a Transit the interior is neat, ergonomic and the scope for customisation is vast, due to its name.

Ford Transit Custom MHEV

Don't fancy having to plug your Transit Custom in, but still want the benefits of a hybrid, then the MHEV version of the Transit Custom may be more to your liking.

Again, it's a Ford Transit, and to be honest, Ford has the hybrid van options all taken care of, and take up most of this list's slots. Unlike the PHEV version, the MHEV is diesel, and uses engine braking to charge the battery, giving you around 53mpg according to Ford's official figures.

Load capacity will range, depending on year, and ranges from 1,239kg up to 1,406kg, with a towing capacity of 2,300kg like its PHEV sibling. These vans are older than the updated PHEV version spoken about previously, but they are a strong, dependable van that could appeal to those looking for a less expensive alternative that will still impress.

Toyota Corolla Commercial

Toyota Corolla Commercial

Breaking up the Ford dominance in our list, the Toyota Corolla Commercial is based on the popular Corolla car, essentially it is just that, with the rear seats making way for a load space of 1,326 litres, or a payload of 425kg.

This is a hybrid van ideal for those who perhaps don't want a big and bulky, typically boxy van. It's essentially an estate just made into a van. It could suit your business as it blends in more like a car, which some people will want, as it may not draw in unwanted attention if you have to street park it or similar.

Circa 60mpg is possible, from its 120bhp 1.8-litre petrol hybrid engine set-up. The car is charged via regenerative braking, so there's no need for plugging in, although it can only use its fully-electric mode for a few miles at a time.

Ford Fiesta MHEV Van

Ford Fiesta Mild Hybrid Van Pair

Back to Ford, which is unsurprising when they dominate the hybrid market. Competitors have just gone for fully-electric vans, or their conventional diesel or petrol versions, whilst Ford offer all three types.

The Fiesta Van is like the aforementioned Corolla, as it's also based on a car, and then made the simple switch to a van. Ideal for those who want something compact and not as bulky as a typical van.

Being essentially a Fiesta means it's great to drive too, and the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine suits it well. This is a self-charging hybrid, again done via regenerative braking, although it's just to complement to the petrol engine, boosting economy with up to 56mpg possible, as it shuts the engine off up to 15mph to boost economy.
