Alpine A110 GT Front Angle in Blue

The Alpine A110 is a pure, focused and great to drive sports car.

It sits as the car that brought the Alpine brand back, with the A110 unveiled at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show.

The very first cars were Premiere Edition models, which came along in 2018 and were limited edition variants totalling 1,955 units (1955 year Alpine was founded). Entry-level Pure models came along after, with the higher specification Legende versions also available, again both in 2018.

A11O S was introduced in 2019, whilst 2022 model year cars were upgraded, in which you could ger a A110, GT, and S. An R variant was introduced in 2022, whilst a R Turini version was introduced for 2024.

There are also multiple limited edition cars which have been launched since 2020 with the A110 R Ultime being the 345bhp halo model. Today, A110 is the base variant.

Engines and Driving Experience

Alpine A110 Range

All Alpine A110 models use a 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, with either 249bhp in base specification, or 296bhp in the S, GTS and R versions. The most powerful version is the ultra-limited A110 R Ultime which offers 345bhp.

Performance is excellent no matter what variant you opt for, with 0 to 62mph happening in 4.5 seconds in standard A110 spec, or 4.2 seconds in other variants such as the GTS. R 70 versions are even quicker, taking 3.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 62mph. Ultime versions drop this time to 3.8 seconds.

The driving experience has always been deserved of high praise, with the A110 being mentioned in the same ranks as the Porsche Cayman and Lotus Emira. Due to its lightweight, the A110 is a bona fide driver's car.

Practicality and Running Costs

Being a proper sports car, running costs for the Alpine A110 will be considerably more than your family hatchback or trendy SUV, but not as bad as you may initially think.

Due to the lightweight and automatic DCT transmission, 35mpg is possible, and perhaps even more on a longer motorway run. Servicing is similar to that of other Renault group cars, and can be done at any Evans Halshaw Alpine retailer.

As for practicality, the A110 is a two-seater, two door sports car, so it's not as practical as a hot hatchback or sports coupé. That said there is two luggage areas, one in the front (frunk) offering 100 litres, and one in rear offering 96 litres. Therefore it's really only suitable for weekend bags or the odd carry on luggage sized case.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Alpine A110 GT Interior

The interior of the Alpine A110 is well made and refined. You'll find leather seats, Alcantara seats or a mix of both depending on the variant you're looking at.

There's a digital instrument cluster, and central infotainment screen too. Later cars have a more up-to-date set-up, which is crisper and cleaner, but if you're buying an A110, you're perhaps more focused about the drive.

That said, being owned by Renault, you'll find useful tech such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to ensure keeping connected is easy. Safety features are also decent within the A110 range featuring emergency brake assist, stability control, anti-lock brakes, tyre pressure monitoring, four-piston front calipers, front and rear Brembo brakes, driver and passenger airbag and hill start assist.

Is the Alpine A110 right for me?

The Alpine A110 is a bona fide driver's car that is for those who perhaps don't want the somewhat stereotypical sports car.

With plenty of versions, the A110 is still a rare car when compared to its competitors. The Porsche Cayman is the textbook sports car for this price bracket, whilst the Lotus Emira is arguably the best looking out of these three cars. Then there's the BMW M2 which offers more practicality and the iconic M characteristics.

If you love French cars, and perhaps have had fast Renaults in the past, the Alpine A110 is perhaps the ideal sophisticated, rare and ultimate French sports car that will satisfy your sports car itch.
