The Volkswagen Transporter is the best-selling van in history, thanks to its roots being able to be traced back to 1949, when the Volkswagen Type 2 (T1) was first produced.

Economy, Towing, and Performance
Economy of the Transporter is good, with the well-known 2.0-litre TDI engines (various power rartings) and even 2.0-litre TSI petrol engines available in the range.
Diesel variants are much more economical, as you'd expect, but a petrol van will still tempt, especially when they can achieve circa 30mpg, whilst the diesels will achieve circa 45mpg.
The 2.0-litre TDI engines are extremely popular in the VAG (VW-Audi Group) cars and vans, and it's the same story in the Transporter, providing plenty of poke, comfort and refinement.
The alternative 2.0-litre TSI petrol ensures the Transporter is a very quick van to drive, whilst also being very car-like too, which is a major plus in a van.
Manual and automatic DSG transmissions are available in the range, whilst towing capability sees the Transporter warrant a 750kg unbraked capacity - as is the limit, whilst braked, capacity is up to 2,500kg.
Bodystyles, Payload, and Capacity
There are many variants of the Volkswagen Transporter. As well as the standard panel van, there's also a Shuttle minibus version, along with a Kombi model, chassis cab (for conversions), Caravelle people carrier and even a California campervan.
Concentrating on the panel van, there are two body lengths, three roof heights and four total weights, which means payloads and capacities will vary depending on exact spec.
Payloads range from 700kg to 1,300kg, whilst capacity figures are expressed below.
- Maximum load length = Ranges from 2,575mm to 2,975mm depending on exact specification.
- Maximum load height = Ranges from 1,410mm to 1,940mm depending on exact specification.

Interior, Technology, and Safety
Interiors have always been high quality in VW cars for a while, and it's the same story with their vans.
The Transporter's interior is neatly styled, car-like and without doubt one of the best on the market.
'Startline' trims provide a decent standard of kit which includes a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, electric windows and electric heated door mirrors. However, if you have a little more budget, try and opt for the higher-spec 'Highline' models as you get adaptive cruise control, air conditioning, heated windscreen, front and rear parking sensors, alarm and body-coloured bumpers, door mirrors and door handles - which help give the van a more premium presence.
Safety kit is pretty decent too with standard features including electronic stability control, ABS, autonomous emergency braking, as well as driver and passenger airbags.
Is the Volkswagen Transporter right for me?
With such an iconic legacy, the Volkswagen Transporter lives up to its reputation as a strong, beautifully made van, that is far more refined and car-like than a lot of other vans on the market.
They do tend to cost more though as a result, and textbook alternatives like the Ford Transit Custom will also tempt other buyers away.
However, if you don't like the clinical textbook nature of the Transit, and fancy something which will feel much more refined and special, a VW Transporter is a well worth a look.
