The second generation Volkswagen Crafter available from 2017 onwards is a large van, offering textbook quality VW are known for.
Unlike the first generation on sale from 2006 to 2017 which was built by Mercedes-Benz, and therefore was near identical to their Sprinter van, this second gen version is completely unique to VW.

Economy, Towing, and Performance
There's a choice of four 2.0-litre TDI engines available with the Crafter with varying power levels, along with FWD, RWD and 4WD. Finding a perfect Crafter should therefore be a simple process.
There's 100bhp, 120bhp, 138bhp and 175bhp. Manual and automatic transmissions are available, with the latter being better in reducing fatigue and generally being easier to live with.
Economy usually sits between 30mpg and 38mpg depending on spec, and performance is decent across the board, with the larger engines and AWD being ideal for those who want to carry larger loads and tow.
Talking of towing, each variant can tow 750kg unbraked, as is the limit, whilst braked capability is anything up to 3,500kg depending on exact spec.
Bodystyles, Payload, and Capacity
As with many large vans, there's a few different variations of the Crafter featuring slightly different bodystyles.
Therefore, you can find short-wheelbase (SWB) and long-wheelbase (LWB) versions, along with three body lengths and three roof heights too, although the latter isn't available on each body length.
Payloads alter slightly depending on model, but these will usually range from 761kg to 1,607kg.
Capacity also differs depending on exact spec, and is shown below.
- Max load length = Ranges between 3,450mm and 4,855mm depending on specification.
- Max load width = 1,832mm across all panel van variants.
- Max load height = Ranges between 1,726mm and 2,169mm depending on specification.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
The interior of the Volkswagen Crafter is typically VW, which means as van interiors go, it's certainly one of the finest out there.
It takes after Volkswagen passenger cars in being beautifully designed, ergonomic and of high quality.
As for technology, you can select 'Startline' models or the higher specification 'Trendline' models. The former get Bluetooth and remote locking - while the optional Business Pack adds in useful front and rear parking sensors, an alarm and air con.
The 'Trendline' higher spec models get an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, DAB, App Connect and cruise control. 'Highline' models which were on sale for a period of time added in adaptive cruise control and heated windscreen.
Safety is also excellent with Crosswind Assist, Driver Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, Park Assist, Trailer Assist, Rear Traffic Alert and Automatic Post-Collision Braking featuring within the models on offer.
