Volkswagen Passat rear

The Volkswagen Passat is an executive car that offers a spacious cabin and a quality feel throughout.

When it comes to executive cars, buyers have a choice between budget-friendly options such as the Vauxhall Insignia, or premium models such as the BMW 3 Series. The Passat is a happy medium, offering an upmarket interior alongside affordable running costs.

Reasons to consider the Passat as a used car purchase include:

  • Volkswagen build quality
  • Refined driving experience
  • Low running costs
  • Spacious cabin
  • Available as a saloon or estate

Engines and Driving Experience

Volkswagen Passat front

Thanks to a refined ride and quiet cabin, the Passat is great for soaking up long journeys. It may not be as engaging to drive as the likes of the Ford Mondeo, but the Passat makes up for this with a supple suspension setup that irons out rough road surfaces.

  • 1.5-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.7 seconds, up to 46.3mpg
  • 1.4-litre GTE Plug-in Hybrid: 218bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.7 seconds, up to 282.5mpg (all-electric range of up to 36 miles)

  • 1.6-litre: 120bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10.8 seconds, up to 70.6mpg
  • 2.0-litre: 148bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.9 seconds, up to 60.2mpg
  • 2.0-litre: 197bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.4 seconds, up to 54.3mpg
  • 2.0-litre 4MOTION: 237bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.1 seconds, up to 39.3mpg

Practicality and Running Costs

Volkswagen Passat boot

The Passat is available as a traditional saloon or as an estate. You'll pay a small premium for the estate since it has a more spacious boot and a large opening tailgate. The saloon hardly falls short of the mark though, and will be more than ample for the majority of motorists.

In fact, with 586 litres on offer, the saloon's boot is considerably larger than the likes of the Mazda6 (480 litres). This extends up to 1,152 litres with the rear seats folded flat. For reference, the estate has a 650-litre boot (1,780 litres with folded rear seats).

Petrol versions of the Passat can tow up to 1,500kg, while the diesels can haul up to 2,200kg. Insurance groups for the Passat vary between 12 and 28, which isn't bad for this class of car. Affordable servicing and maintenance is available through all Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Volkswagen Passat interior

As you'd expect from a Volkswagen, the Passat's interior has an elegant design and is finished using a host of quality materials.

The central touchscreen provides an upmarket feel to the cabin because of its vibrant display and smart layout. An analogue instrument cluster is standard for the most part, but some models come with a stunning digital display, so keep an eye out for them.

Entry-level SE Nav models come with parking sensors front and rear, satellite navigation and LED headlights. If you want something sportier, then we'd recommend an R-Line model, which gets lowered suspension, larger wheels and unique exterior styling.

The Passat scored the full five stars in its Euro NCAP crash test, scoring highly for adult and child occupant protection. Standard safety features include:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Electronic stability control (ESC)
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • ISOFIX anchor points

Is the Volkswagen Passat right for me?

If you need something that's more spacious than a Golf, but you want a premium finish and affordable running costs, then the Volkswagen Passat is an excellent choice.

Competition in the executive car segment is fierce, so we'd recommend shopping around before committing. Affordable alternatives include the Ford Mondeo and Mazda6, but if you don't mind upping your budget then the likes of the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class are guaranteed to impress.
