Blue Suzuki S-Cross Exterior Front Static

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross is a small crossover SUV that's good value for money and available with four-wheel drive. Throughout its life, the S-Cross has received a range of updates, making it a great alternative to the Suzuki Vitara and Across SUVs.

Although it's a less common sight on UK roads than some rivals, the S-Cross has a range of great features that make it a great option, including:

  • Efficient engines
  • Comfortable ride
  • Low running costs
  • Decent equipment list as standard

Engines and Driving Experience

In 2020, the S-Cross received an update that reduced the engine choice to one; a 1.4-litre petrol Boosterjet mild hybrid. This powertrain produces 127bhp and returns up to 52.7mpg as well as a 0 to 62mph time of 9.5 seconds.

If you're not quite convinced by hybrid power, then traditional petrol and diesel powertrains can be found if you opt for an older model:

  • 1.0-litre petrol: 109bhp, 0 to 62mph in 11 seconds and circa 56mpg.
  • 1.4-litre petrol: 138bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10.2 seconds and circa 50mpg.
  • 1.6-litre petrol: 118bhp, 0 to 62mph in 11 seconds and circa 51mpg.
  • 1.6-litre diesel: 118bhp, 0 to 62mph in 12 seconds and circa 67mpg.

While the performance figures may leave a bit to be desired, the car actually feels light and nimble. The S-Cross is fairly comfortable and refined at lower speeds, but at higher speeds you will start to notice imperfections in the road.

Practicality and Running Costs

The S-Cross is well-packaged and comes with a decent amount of space around the cabin. In terms of head and legroom, front occupants will have little to complain about, but those sat in the rear may feel a bit cramped if they're taller than average.

440 litres of boot space is much-welcomed, but if you need extra room then you can simply fold the 60/40 split-folding rear seats to access a larger space. Other features such as a luggage net and a false boot floor do come in handy, but that's about as far as it goes when it comes to additional, clever storage spaces.

One of the biggest pulls of the S-Cross is its value for money and this is replicated in its running costs. Insurance ranges between groups 15 and 25 (out of 50) dependent upon specification. Low cost servicing and maintenance can also be carried out at any Evans Halshaw dealership.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Suzuki S-Cross Interior

The interior is what you'd expect for a value car, it does the job and feels well put together, but does without luxurious materials. The dashboard is also well laid out and easy to use, especially on newer models thanks to the updated infotainment system.

A surprising amount of technology is available as well. Entry-level models are quite basic and get dual-zone air conditioning and DAB radio, but higher specifications get features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

The full five-star safety rating was awarded to the S-Cross when it was put through Euro NCAP's crash tests thanks to a range of safety features, such as:

  • Radar Brake Support
  • Seven airbags
  • Stability control
  • Tyre-pressure monitoring system

Is the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross right for me?

The S-Cross is a great option if you're working with a budget and want a car that's well-equipped and good value for money.

Other alternatives such as the MG ZS can rival the S-Cross when it comes to cost-effectiveness, but rivals such as the Ford Puma have been applauded for their engaging driving experience, something that the S-Cross cannot offer.
