Mitsubishi ASX Front

The third generation Mitsubishi ASX is an alternate family SUV that first came about 2010. Here we are taking a look at the 2019 facelift.

Looking to stray away from the robust workhorse nature of most Mitsubishi SUVs, the ASX is a softer take and looked to go after the smaller family-friendly SUVs which are now hugely popular on UK roads. On first impressions, the Mitsubishi ASX offers:

  • Decent practicality
  • Two and four-wheel drive
  • Typical Mitsubishi feel
  • Distinct chunky styling

Engines and Driving Experience

Mitsubishi ASX Rear

Mitsubishi does sport a number of models with simple engine choices. The ASX is no different with the facelift version featuring just one petrol engine, coming in the form of a 2.0-litre unit.

It produces 148bhp, replacing the older and less efficient 1.6-litre and is 30 percent more powerful thanks to the increase in displacement. As standard, the ASX is front-wheel drive, although there's the option of four-wheel drive for those who want a 'proper' SUV experience.

To drive, the ASX isn't the sharpest family SUV out there. A Hyundai Kona is much more exciting to drive. That said, the ASX does deal with UK roads rather well and is therefore pretty comfortable, but it does suffer with some body lean.

Practicality and Running Costs

Mitsubishi ASX Boot

Despite its relatively compact proportions; this is a trendy 'family' SUV after all, the ASX does offer decent practicality and space.

A high roof and plenty of legroom ensure getting comfortable is a doddle for most. There's a big boot too, with 442 litres on offer or a massive 1,193 litres if the rear seats are folded flat - ideal for weekend tip runs and the like.

Running costs shouldn't be too bad, what with fuel economy being in the region of 35mpg, although this is not as good as rivals which can offer 50mpg, such as the Peugeot 3008 and Hyundai Kona.

Value servicing can be completed at any Evans Halshaw retailer, whilst insurance groupings are 23 and 25 out of 50.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Mitsubishi ASX Interior

Interior quality of the Mitsubishi ASX feels like it's built to last and the vibe is pretty decent, but can feel a bit dated and not in keeping with its rivals.

This is due to the analogue dials, as most competitors from the likes of Peugeot and Vauxhall have all gone digital - the ASX showing its long life-cycle in this aspect.

However, the latest facelifted model does feature climate control, a rear-view camera, heated front seats and cruise control, which are all welcome reliefs.

Although the ASX does have a five-star Euro NCAP score, it was achieved back in 2011 when the test wasn't as strict. That said, the ASX still offers:

  • Cross traffic alert
  • Active Traction Control
  • Lane change assist
  • Blind-sport warning
  • Electronic stability control

Is the Mitsubishi ASX right for me?

The Mitsubishi ASX is a family SUV which may not be as flashy as its competitors, but this could be ideal for those looking for a more no-nonsense approach.

A Peugeot 3008 or Vauxhall Mokka is going to be more impressive for those who want a more up-to-date digital experience, but with the optional four-wheel drive and robustness of the Mitsubishi, the ASX could tick more boxes for those looking for more of a workhorse that they aren't scared of getting mucky and thrown about.
