Used MINI Convertible For Sale

If you're a big fan of the regular MINI Hatchback, but you want to drive with the roof down, then you'll want to consider the MINI Convertible you see here.

MINI's range of cars are already renowned for their excellent driving experience, but the Convertible adds to the thrill by giving you access to roof-down motoring. With a premium finish inside and punchy engines, the Convertible makes for a great car to commute in.

Here are a few reasons you may want to consider a MINI Convertible:

  • Fun to drive
  • Affordable to run and maintain
  • Quality interior design
  • Great technology
  • Convenient electric roof

Engines and Driving Experience

Usually, removing the roof from a car makes it less rigid and responsive. That isn't the case with the Convertible, which offers a fun driving experience that's typical of MINI. The refined interior makes for a more enjoyable drive as well, with road and wind noise kept at bay by the fabric roof (when it's up).

The MINI Convertible is only available with petrol power. The more eco-friendly 1.5-litre engine provides just 134bhp, but it feels spritely inside the MINI, which is a light car. As an added bonus, you'll see up to 47.9mpg.

Inside the Cooper S you'll find a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine. It feels brisk thanks to its 176bhp power output, yet will still return up to 43.5mpg. A more potent version of this engine can be found in the John Cooper Works (JCW) variant. Alongside the 228bhp output are upgrades to the brakes and suspension for added driving thrills.

Practicality and Running Costs

Blue MINI Convertible, boot

MINI went to a lot of effort to make the Convertible more practical, which reflects in the greater amount of head and legroom compared to its predecessor. However, the boot still isn't much to shout about at 215 litres with the roof up and 160 litres with the roof down.

You may feel inclined to use the rear seats for extra luggage space, and handily they do split and fold down. Because of where the roof sits when down, MINI have fitted the Convertible with a bootlid that folds downwards. It's not an issue, but it may seem odd at first compared to a regular bootlid.

The Convertible occupies insurance groups ranging between 21 and 29 (out of 50), so your annual premiums shouldn't be too dear. Servicing and maintenance can be completed through Evans Halshaw retailers, although we'd recommend visiting Stratstone MINI if you want more specialist care.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Blue MINI Convertible, interior

Despite being an affordable car, the Convertible has a premium interior. High-quality materials feature throughout, while design cues from the brand's heritage are there for all to see.

If you're familiar with any sort of MINI, then you may know that the central dashboard used to house a large circular speedometer. MINI have kept the shape in this model, but used it to house the infotainment system instead, which adds to the overall ambience.

There are three different specifications to choose from:

  • Classic
  • Sport
  • Exclusive

Regardless of the model you go for, all cars benefit from air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, DAB radio and automatic headlights. The Sport model gets items such as bigger wheels and a different body kit, while the Exclusive is geared towards luxury and features leather seats.

Safety features and driver aids available include:

  • Pop out rollover hoops
  • Six airbags
  • Tyre-pressure monitoring system
  • Stability control

Is the MINI Paceman right for me?

The MINI Convertible represents affordable top-down motoring, which may explain why they're so popular here in Britain. Not only that, but they are well-made and efficient, with the classy interior and frugal engines proving testament to that. In short, it's a great choice of car if you don't mind a slightly smaller boot.

There are plenty of convertibles to choose from on the market. The Mazda MX-5 is the epitome of affordable top-down driving, and has a boot that's equally small (130 litres). Alternatively, if you want something more practical, then a Mercedes-Benz C-Class is certainly worth a look.
