Offering a number of different engines to choose from that suit a variety of needs, the Tipo's range starts with a 1.0-litre petrol engine that can return up to 51mpg combined. Higher-powered 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines can also be found, offering combined fuel economy figures of 49.6 and 44.8mpg respectively.

For maximum fuel economy, the 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre Multijet diesel engines are the ones to go for, as they're capable of achieving up to 76.3mpg on a combined cycle. For maximum comfort, automatic transmissions can also be found, but these are less common.

None of the engines return particularly exciting performance figures, but that isn't what the Tipo is designed for. Instead, you can be confident that you'll receive a comfortable driving experience no matter which engine you opt for.

Practicality and Running Costs

Practicality is the Tipo's strongest suit, being able to pack plenty of luggage into its large, 440 litres of boot space. If you need the extra space you can either fold the 60:40 rear folding seats down, or opt for the estate bodystyle which offers 550 litres of boot space as standard. An SUV-inspired 'cross' model is also on offer.

Coming with a 5-door configuration as standard, climbing in and out of the Tipo couldn't be easier. Once inside, all occupants can enjoy a generous amount of leg and headroom. The spacious interior also makes fitting a child's seat to the ISOFIX mounting points on the rear seats much easier.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The interior within the Tipo may not be what you expect from the Italian brand. It features a more subtle, professional finish than the exuberant interiors seen on other Fiat models. When it comes to standard equipment, entry-level specifications offer features such as cruise control and Uconnect infotainment system. Going for a higher configuration can see you gain access to further technology such as a rear view camera and satellite navigation.
