The Citroën C4 is a practical family hatchback that is stylish and practical. The model you see here was released in 2021.

Although the C4 is technically sold as a hatchback, it shares a lot of similarities with a traditional SUV. This isn't a bad thing because it means the C4 has the driving manners of a regular family car, but also has the enhanced practicality that SUVs are known for.

While the C4 is a fine-looking car, its appearance isn't the only reason you'd consider one. Notable highlights include:

  • Efficient range of engines (including an all-electric variant)
  • Big boot and spacious rear seats
  • Loaded with useful and desirable technology
  • Incredibly comfortable

Engines and Driving Experience

Red Citroen C4, driving

Citroën are renowned for their comfortable cars, and the C4 is no exception. This car utilises something the brand calls Progressive Hydraulic Cushions. We won't bore you with the details, but we will tell you that they soak up a lot of the imperfections on Britain's roads.

Bar that, the interior is well-insulated from road and wind noise, while the seats have been purposefully designed for maximum comfort.

There are a variety of petrol engines to choose from courtesy of a 1.2-litre PureTech unit, and produce anywhere between 100 and 155bhp. Expect between 44 and 54mpg from these units, depending on the variant you go for.

Two diesel engines are available, producing either 110 or 130bhp. These will return between 56 and 64mpg without too much effort. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard fit, but higher-spec engines get an 8-speed automatic.

Finally, there is the ë-C4, which recruits a 50kWh battery and can travel up to 217 miles on a full charge. Producing zero emissions, it's a great choice if you want to reduce your carbon footprint.

Practicality and Running Costs

Red Citroen C4, boot

Combining a hatchback with an SUV may sound odd, but it translates to a 5-door family car that's immensely practical. Take the boot for instance, its 380-litre capacity may not be class-leading (it's certainly up there), but the flat loading sill and adjustable boot floor makes it convenient to use on a daily basis.

A sloping roofline doesn't traditionally translate to a spacious interior, but the seats are positioned low in the cabin (despite the raised ride height), meaning there's plenty of headroom for tall passengers. As you'd expect, the C4 is fitted with ISOFIX anchor points in the rear, making it easy to fit a child's seat.

Citroën are known for their affordability, and this carries over into the running costs. None of the models exceed insurance group 20, and the flat-rate road tax is unlikely to break the bank. Servicing and maintenance is readily available through your nearest Evans Halshaw Citroën retailer.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The vibrant 10-inch touchscreen that occupies the central dashboard really looks the part, and beautifully complements the soft-touch materials and sophisticated interior design. The bright and airy cabin certainly makes for an enjoyable place to spend time, but the optional electric panoramic sunroof is well worth seeking out.

Voice recognition is a standard feature within the infotainment system, while popular apps, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, come as standard.

Features including LED headlights, dual-zone climate control and rear parking sensors can be found on all models across the range. Look further up the range and you'll get luxuries such as a rear-view camera and a head-up display.

Safety features and driver aids available include:

  • Trailer Stability Control
  • Blind spot monitoring system
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane keeping technology
  • Road sign detection

Is the Citroën C4 right for me?

The Citroën C4 is a great family hatchback that makes sense if you want something that's practical and brimming with technology. The efficient engines offer great flexibility when driving and low running costs, although there is the all-electric version should you want a greener car.

There aren't many family hatchbacks that boast the traits of an SUV, but there are some heavy hitters to consider regardless. The Ford Focus is one of them, and offers a great driving experience. Alternatively, there's the Volkswagen Golf, which has been a consistent top performer for some time.
