Introducing the new Renault 5 E-Tech electric
A pop icon returns. After almost three decades away, the iconic Renault 5 is back.
Originally launched in 1972, and running until 1996, the Renault 5 returns with similar principles that saw it rise to popularity originally.
The all-new Renault 5 electric, or to give its full name - Renault 5 E-Tech electric - takes the original's characteristics, which included avant-garde design, versatility and frugality, and perfectly reimagines them, in a car which pays perfect homage to the original, standing out for the right seasons, now fitting in perfectly with what is needed from a small electric car.
Design and Practicality
The original Renault 5 gave a solution, for challenging times for families, along with offering excellent economy, when the fuel crisis was in full swing. This new Renault 5 electric design is therefore perfect for modern day life, appealing due to its compact design, which is affordable for many, harking back to the original, and which offers excellent electric range.
Enhanced to match modern day life, there are three trims to choose from, which include; 'evolution', 'techno' and 'iconic five'.
18-inch black diamond alloy wheels come as standard, whilst 'chrono' black diamond alternatives can be had on the range-topping 'iconic five' model for extra flair. No matter which trim you choose, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric stands thanks to its retro-modern vibe. In short, the car's design is the perfect nod to the original.
Practicality is also presented well, with interior space optimised thanks to a flat floor, and with a 326-litre boot, there's plenty of room for luggage too.
Technology and Safety
Renault 5 E-tech electric is packed with state-of-the-art innovations, which showcases the DNA of Renault - ‘voitures à vivre’, which means 'cars for living'.
Therefore, Renault 5 E-Tech electric offers connectivity, with the latest generation OpenR Link system - which has Google built in, as well over 50 apps to make the ownership experience easier, and more impressive, with things like integrated electric recharging in planned journeys.
Alongside Google, Renault 5 E-Tech electric debuts 'Reno', the official Renault avatar, which acts as a helpful travel companion, and assistant. For example, you could say 'Hey Reno, schedule a charge for 6pm tomorrow'.
Renault 5 E-Tech electric also features enhanced safety tech, such as ADAS, which includes intelligent adaptive cruise control that reads the road, along with Active Driver Assist and a Safety Coach with supports the driver in helping reduce the risk of accidents.
Engines and Performance
The Renault 5 E-Tech electric uses a 40kWh or 52kWh battery, which when complemented by an electric motor gives the car 122bhp or 152bhp.
The 'evolution' trim is only available with 122bhp, whilst the 'techno' and 'iconic five' are available with either 122bhp or the more powerful 152bhp set-up.
0 to 62mph takes 9.0-seconds in the 122bhp, dropping to 7.9 seconds in the more potent 152bhp unit, and both are front-wheel drive.
Electric range is either up to 190 miles in the 122bhp version, or 248 miles with the 152bhp version. No matter which version you opt for, the Renault 5 E-Tech electric keeps it agile, dynamic and fun to drive.
Charging
Multiple charging options are available for the Renault 5 E-Tech electric.
A domestic charging station (7.4 kW) takes just over 5 hours to charge, whilst a standard 3-pin domestic socket will take over 17 hours.
However, the Mobilize charge pass give you access to Europe's largest charging network, whilst the Renault 5 E-Tech electric also accepts up to 100kW DC rapid charge, allowing you to go from 15 to 80 percent charge in 30 minutes.
