Introducing the New Peugeot 408
There aren’t many family-sized vehicles that offer the perfect blend of sportiness and comfort., but the new Peugeot 408 might be one of them. Refined, spacious, modern, it’s sure to catch the eye of forward-thinking family drivers who want both cutting-edge EV tech and familiar comfort.
The Peugeot 408 comes in multiple variants. Among them the Peugeot 408 Hybrid and PHEV, and the Peugeot E-408 - the all-electric model. Both have a lot to offer. Plenty of interior space and new, upgraded batteries to keep you driving smoothly for hours.
The Peugeot 408 punches way above its weight. It looks and feels like a much more expensive car, though for some the compromises it makes to offer a more affordable price point may be enough to sway them against it.
Design and Practicality
At 4,687mm long the new Peugeot 408 might at first glance appear to be an SUV. But side-on, you notice it’s super slender - more like a beefy hatchback in lots of ways.
But that doesn’t take away from its design, it adds to it. The new Peugeot 408 offers something unexpected every time you look at it. From one angle, sleek, sporty lines, from another, solid and dependable bulk, so it's clear to see the careful engineering that underpins the aerodynamics.
While the Peugeot 408 and the Peugeot E-408 both look sporty, you’ll find them surprisingly usable in everyday contexts. Take the boot space for example: the Hybrid variant comes with a generous 536 litres (the EV a little less with a more standard 468 litres). There’s plenty of leg and seat room too. Both models offer five comfortable seats with a folding back row for extra storage.
Technology and Safety
Of course, the battery tech in the new Peugeot 408 and E-408 is different, but on the inside the driver technology is basically the same. Both put ease of use front and centre. An unintrusive 10-inch touchscreen brings you Peugeot’s Smart i-Cockpit® (i-Connect® Advanced, with navigation, voice recognition and OTA updates, is available on higher trims, too). The steering wheel is noticeably compact compared to other similar family-sized SUVs of this type.
Peugeot has put a lot of effort into safety features as well. You can enjoy all the safety tech you would expect from a new SUV/hatchback, including adaptive cruise control, 180-degree reversing cameras, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, and AEB, among plenty of others.
Previous iterations have scored well when it comes to Euro NCAP tests too, and we expect no different from this latest generation.
Powertrains and Performance
The new Peugeot 408 offers a number of different powertrain options to suit differing lifestyles and preferences.
First up, the Hybrid. Even though full EVs are becoming more and more standard for new UK market vehicles, the new plug-in hybrid Peugeot 408 remains as an extremely attractive option. Offering a strong 243bhp, up to 109mpg and around 53 miles of electric-only driving, it is really the best of both worlds. The Full Hybrid model on the other hand offers a more traditional experience with no need to plug your vehicle in to recharge its 12.4kWh motor. For this variant, fuel efficiency stands at 56mpg, while power is at a smaller, yet still punchy enough, 147bhp mark.
The all-electric variant offers a more powerful 58kWh battery. Although this gives you a slightly lower overall power figure than the PHEV variant (216bhp), it makes up for it with a solid 281-mile all-electric range. Plenty for everyday driving and usually enough for longer trips without too many charges, too.
Charging
Charging times also vary between the multiple engine/battery variants, but all three offer convenient solutions.
The Full Hybrid powertrain will recharge itself as you drive using intelligent a regenerative braking system, so there's no charging considerations to think about.
All-Electric variants will require plugging in to recharge. When using an ultra fast rapid charger as part of the public charging network, you can expect charging times of just 31 minutes for a 20 to 80 percent charge with the New E-408. Home charging solutions are also available, allowing you to start each day as fresh as the next, while intelligent battery pre-conditioning will also help preserve the health of your battery long-term.
Plug-in Hybrid variants will need plugging in to recharge too, with full recharging times of 2 hours and 5 minutes when using a wall box type charging station.
